A powerful winter storm is sweeping across Colorado and headed east.

Blizzard and winter storm warnings extend from eastern Colorado into Kansas, Wyoming and Nebraska.

Colorado transportation officials have closed portions of Interstates 70 and 25, the two main arteries crossing the state. The National Weather Service says snow is falling at 2 inches an hour, and snow totals have been mounting rapidly along the Front Range and eastern Colorado. The town of Pinecliff, west of Denver, has already received 18 inches.

More than 200 arriving and departing flights at the Denver airport have been canceled, while many schools are closed and state lawmakers have canceled legislative work for the day.

The weather service says another foot of snow could fall along the Front Range before the storm moves out tomorrow.

To the east, forecasters say snow will be moderate in Wyoming and Nebraska, with winds that could gust to 35 miles an hour.
