What To Do for Dull, Flaky Lips?
I have dull, flaky lips. No matter what I do -- drink lots of water, use chapstick constantly -- I can’t get that plump, healthy lip look. What treatment can I have done at a salon and what can I do at home to maintain the healthy pout?
Did you know that it takes about a month for the skin (anywhere on your body, Including your lips) to shed its upper layer of dead cells and allow new, healthy cells to surface?
But sometimes, especially in extreme weather, the shedding gets slowed or stunted causing flaky lips.
A few years ago, you’d be hard-pressed to find a spa treatment that was meant solely to help your less-than-perfect pout. Now, however, spas are offering exfoliation treatments for your mouth. Sometimes available as an add-on to a facial, these treatments can be found at top-notch resorts like Tuscon, Arizona’s Canyon Ranch, which offers a Lip Smoothie service. If there are no lip treatments at your local spa, ask your aesthetician to zone in on your lips for a few minutes during your next facial or body-buffing session.
There are at-home kits that give you a similar-to-spa experience, and they usually include two-step systems that exfoliate and then pamper. One example is Benefit's Lipscription ($32; benefitcosmetics.com) with smoothing alpha-hydroxy acids and hydrating jojoba.
