Q&A: Erection Firmness
Can you please advise me on how to maintain the hardness of my erection? I don’t suffer from premature ejaculation but I lose my hardness sometimes when I am trying to pleasure my partner.
There a re a lot of things you can do to help you achieve and maintain a firmer erection. If you do even some of them, you should be good to go for a long time to come! It's all about blood flow -- increasing it and keeping it. Let’s look at your general health first.
- If you smoke -- stop. It's the number one killer of sexual potential and is a predictor of early ED (erectile dysfunction). Smoking causes the smallest blood vessels and capillaries to close down prematurely, as you age. It affects the regions furthest from the heart and the extremities first and foremost. Erectile dysfunction can be one of the main early predictors of heart problems. You can correct and turn around the damage done, but it will take awhile so find a good program and stop smoking now.
- Drink less alcohol, coffee and soft drink stimulants. Eat more fruits and vegetables and less red meat and fatty foods. You are what you eat, literally. Lower your bad cholesterol levels. Again, it’s about blood flow and as you age, getting blood to the extremities gets harder on the heart, so one of the first areas to go is the genital and pelvic floor area when blood flow is sluggish. This goes for women too. Blood delivers oxygen and oxygen is necessary for good sexual response in addition to firm erections.
- Do your Kegel sexercises. Learn to do them right and do at least 200 a day. They aren't just for women. They take about 6 or 7 minutes and it also helps to focus your mind while you are doing them. Imagine your penis getting stronger and harder. I'm not kidding. Studies show that athletes who focus their minds on the specific muscles they are exercising have stronger muscles in those areas. You'll have much more control, stronger orgasms, more libido, and much stronger erections if you work up to doing 200 of these a day. You’ll notice the difference in just two weeks.
- Learn to breathe deeply into your abdomen all the time but especially during sexual activities. When you practice breathing deeply, again, focus your mind on your breath. This helps you avoid anxiety and calms your mind and body. Relaxing during increased levels of pleasure is key to lasting awhile. It also creates a more harmonious atmosphere that banishes anxious thoughts and fears of old patterns.
Here are a few quick solutions while you get your health on track:
You can use a soft, surgical rubber cock ring made for the purpose of creating firmer erections. Upon arousal, your body directs more blood to your penis. This blood flows into the penis on the inside and then it flows back out of the penis on the outside. The cock ring slows down the flow of blood leaving the penis, but because it’s so close to the surface you don’t need to have it on very tight. And please don't leave it on for more than 20 minutes at a time.
When you are engaged in intercourse, stand up or kneel on the bed or couch. Being in upright positions causes the blood to stay in your penis longer and makes your erections firmer. This works because it is more difficult for your heart to pump blood back uphill, so to speak. If you lie down, the blood can circulate easier to your heart. So stay upright.
If you are receiving oral sex, sit on your knees or stand, also. You'll notice the difference. Good positions to use for intercourse might be rear-entry or standing positions where the man stands by the edge of the bed and the woman is on her back at the edge of the bed. She puts her legs up on his shoulders or he can cradle them in his arms at the elbows.
Good sex can be an indicator of good health. Staying limber, happy, active and eating well-balanced meals can make a huge difference in your sex life as well as your life.
