Another Early 40's Life Transition: Uranus Opposition Pluto

If you're in your early 40's right now (born late 1965 through 1968), one of the things on your planetary agenda is the opposition of Uranus to natal Pluto. Pluto has an irregular orbit, so how old a person is when Uranus opposes Pluto varies somewhat from generation to generation. I had mine when I was 45. The current generation is having Uranus opposition Pluto at around the same time it is experiencing Uranus opposition Uranus (because the two planets were close together in the sign of Virgo in the mid to late 60's). These people are experiencing a unique combination of the exhilarating and the scary, but everyone goes through Uranus opposition Pluto. Here's a brief description of this life transition. If you have your chart handy, you might want to look at the time in your life when Uranus opposed your natal Pluto (you can find a Swiss ephemeris at astro.com). More…

When Will Oil and Gas Prices Go Down?

I don't know the answer to the question above. But I predict that they will go down, and go down drastically. And after they do, what many Americans already suspect about gas prices will be revealed: someone's been lying about the cause of the run-up. You don't have to know anything about astrology to make a prediction like this, although the symbolism of the planets helps to tell the story. And the story is essentially this: 1) markets create bubbles; 2) when a market seems crazy and out of control--it is.   More…

Anti-Depressants and Transits

I'm a little hesitant to bring up the subject of anti-depressants and astrology, for lots of reasons. But I'm going to mention it because the use of anti-depressants is so widespread in our society today, as is the use of other long-term medications that can have an effect on mood. Indeed, I read recently that there have been anecdotal reports of anti-smoking and asthma drugs linked with depression and suicidal feelings, even though the drugs aren't there to treat mood disorders. And of course, the use of ADHD drugs in children is another controversial topic. In some unsettling ways, it is as though we are all accidentally part of a gigantic social experiment in mood alteration. What does this mean for our personal lives and the astrology of our personal lives? More…

How Can Astrology Meet Your Needs?

Usually, I post something equivalent to an article or examination of a particular topic. But today, I'm going to ask you a question. How can astrologers and astrology meet your needs? Astrological approaches range from the traditional to the modern, from the simplistic to the mind-numblingly complicated. Objectives range from spiritual enlightenment to predicting the performance of financial markets. In-between is a whole bunch of other stuff. But what about the client or consumer of astrology and horoscopes? What do you value? More…

More on Jobs, Careers and Astrology

Today I'll add five more tips on astrology and career: 5 More Things to Know About Choosing the 'Right' Career. But first, for those who are interested, here's a link to a CNN/Money article that explains a little bit about rising food prices and Saturn in Virgo. It doesn't mention astrology; it's a practical article about food price cycles. But it tallies with the 2 to 2 1/2 year Saturn transit and points out that we had a similar food price cycle around thirty years ago (the approximate length of a full Saturn cycle). All righty, now on to jobs and careers, continued from last week! More…

Astrological Career Assessment

Through one of those seeming synchronicity things, I'm encountering a fair number of people these days who are trying to figure out what they want to be when they grow up. This is one of those common life dilemmas, and it doesn't matter if you're 56, or 63 and retired, or much, much younger. The question is coming up enough that I'm starting to offer a special kind of consultation for career issues (http://practicalastrology.prettyfedup.com/career.htm). In the meantime, though, I thought I'd share a few observations on astrology and career choice based on my observation. Below is Part I, 5 Things to Know About Choosing the 'Right' Career. More…

Pluto in Cap and Your Sign

Pluto spends such a long time in a sign (it will be in Capricorn most of the time between now and 2024) that it's easy to get the feeling that it's not doing anything in your personal chart or personal life unless there's a very noticeable transit going on. In my experience, though, Pluto is doing a lot in your chart and life, even if he's not always drawing a lot of attention to it. The key, for me, is to look at the solar (based on sun sign) and natal (based on birth date and time) houses he's inching through. For example, when Pluto transited my 8th house, my relationship with my own personal past was completely and radically transformed. When Pluto transited my 9th house, my core beliefs were revolutionized and expanded. When Pluto transited my 11th house, my life goals and my sense of belonging underwent huge changes. So...if Pluto does have a long-lasting effect--what will Pluto in Capricorn mean to you? More…

Stocks and Social Trends By Sign

A couple of years ago, I predicted that at around this time and into the future we'd start hearing less about obesity as a global health problem and more about hunger, food shortages and starvation. It seemed kind of unlikely at the time, but here we are with food riots happening in some places and even reports of food rationing in some stores in the US. Nations around the world are responding to food pressures with protectionist policies (i.e., prohibitions against export). Protectionist sentiment is another thing I've predicted that we can expect to play an important role in the global economy in the near future. These predictions were based on the sign positions of outer planets, and signs can be used to look at stock sectors as well. More…

Did the War in Iraq Cause U.S. Economic Downturn?

I recently read an article on the pros and cons of attributing the current U.S. economic misery to the cost and consequences of the war in Iraq. I've also seen the idea that the war is a cause of our economic crisis mentioned by various political pundits. Apparently, traditional economic theory would argue that the war is not the cause; the cause is a credit crisis caused by bad mortgage loans to sub-prime borrowers. Regular people, however, seem to feel differently, and many people believe that the war is at least partly responsible for either our current recession or the threat of one. Although I'm no economic expert and not really even interested in economic theory, I have been watching economists of all kinds react to what feels like a string of bad economic news for the U.S. and it's changed my opinions on the economy. Mars in Cancer Winds Down

Due to a retrograde, Mars has spent an unusually long time in the domestic, home, and family oriented sign of Cancer since October of last year. When Mars goes through a retrograde period (which it does approximately every 2 years or so), its transit often seems to coincide with an unusual issue that takes a long time to wrap up. Maybe other people have an easier time with this phenomenon, but it often seems to hit me hard. For example, when Mars retrograded through my 12th house, I had killer insomnia and had to confront hidden enemies (very unusual for me). When Mars retrograded through my 4th house, one of my family members developed a bizarre and undiagnosable illness and required a lot of care. More…
