Self-fulfilling Prophecies--Or Not?

I recently read an article in which the author wondered, in essence, whether the seeming accuracy of astrology might be due to the phenomenon of self-fulfilling prophecies. That is, you expect something to happen, so it does. One of my answers to that is partly yes--and that can be a good thing or a bad thing. My other answer is partly no--and that can be a good thing or a bad thing. Let's talk about the partly no portion first. I know a fair number of people who do not wish to know anything about astrology, and so I do not discuss it with them. In many instances, though, I have their birth data, and therefore know when things are expected to happen in their charts. I have seen many times that a person does not have to expect an astrologically indicated event for one to occur. More…

Action Cures Fear

One of my old astrology books has a quote from Carl Jung to the effect that astrology deserves respect if for no other reason than because it represents the human understanding of psychology before science.  There are various systems of astrology and each, I suppose, does represent some of the primal understandings its culture has about human nature and human psychology. What impresses me more and more as I get older is how telling and how true the psychological insights of astrology really are. This thought was prompted by coming across a discussion of how taking action cures one of fear. More…

Mixed Messages

In my chart right now, I have 7 (count ‘em 7) transits, progressions, or solar return aspects affecting the astrological markers for hormones and female identity. I thought I’d talk a little bit about my own at the moment rather complicated chart as a way of addressing something that frequently happens in life–mixed messages. More…

Homes Are Burning: Mars & The Moon

I live in Southern California where homes are ablaze all over the place. My own home is not in any danger (thank goodness), but the moon outside my window is orange, and throughout the day the sun cast an odd light as smoke was visible in every direction around me. As I was doing a reading for someone today, I was struck again by how strangely literal astrology can be. My client had a planet in Aquarius, and she related that during a time when that planet was prominent in her chart, she used to literally carry well water for her family. Aquarius, you may know, is the water bearer. The fires in Southern California are equally literal in their astrological symbolism in the sense that with Mars in Cancer, Mars (fire) is attacking homes (Cancer). More…

Where's Your Mars These Days?

I seem to be hearing from a fair number of people who started feeling the effects of Mars in Cancer right off the bat. Mars is heading toward one of its periodic retrograde cycles, which means it'll be spending an unusually long amount of time in the sign of Cancer. This month it will move briskly toward the middle degrees of the sign, but it will spend almost all of November stuck at 11 and 12 degrees of Cancer, and won't actually leave the sign until the end of the year. Then its retrograde motion will take it back into late degrees of Gemini, and then it'll move forward again to and through Cancer. It won't actually wrap up this Cancerian cycle until May of 2008. So what does this mean to you? Read below for a few thoughts for each of the sun signs. More…

4 Steps to Finding a Mate When You've Been Single For Awhile

Over the years, I've had a number of baby boomer clients (and friends) go through the process of getting back into the dating game after a long layoff. The layoff usually occurs after a divorce or other breakup and seems to average about 7 years in length, although I've had some clients with layoffs off 20 years or more! But then something happens, and the individual in question starts craving romance, companionship, intimacy, and relationship. The process of finding someone with whom one can meet needs for intimacy and connection after a long period of singlehood seems to be similar from person to person and so I thought I'd share a few thoughts on how the process usually seems to go and how it relates to astrology. So below are 4 not-so-easy steps to finding love after a layoff. More…

Health and Saturn in Virgo

If you're a typical boomer, health issues are important to you, if only because you've reached that age when the body requires more conscientious care to stay at its peak. In a way, the current transit of Saturn through Virgo (which lasts a little over two years) offers great opportunities for the boomer generation. How we can take advantage of them? Well, I have a half a dozen suggestions for you to consider. Maybe one of them will help you.   More…

Saturn Bites: Perimenopause

Most of the time when a new client enters my world, he or she is undergoing a major outer planet transit. People most frequently seek out advice or assistance of any sort when unusual or difficult things are going on in their lives--and most of the time when unusual or difficult things are going on in your life, there'll be an outer planet transit occurring. This isn't true 100% of the time, but it's true way more often than not. In fact, if you have been dealing with the difficult or unusual (in either a good or bad sense) in your life, you can contact an astrologer, say "what the ---?" and hopefully get some insight. At least, I hope so, because that's what I do, attempt to give a little insight. More…

The September 11 Eclipse & You

Yesterday, September 11, wasn't just a day of remembrance, it was also the date of a partial solar eclipse. In ancient times, eclipses were considered by astrologers to be harbingers of dreadful events, but fortunately, in fact, they rarely are. Eclipses or partial eclipses of the sun and/or moon occur regularly. Generally, there will be two sets of eclipses per year; each set will contain a solar and a lunar eclipse in conjunction with a new moon and a full moon. The sets occur approximately 5 1/2 months apart. That's a bit of an oversimplification, but fairly close to reality. Astrologers of today have some variation in what they say about eclipses but I'll give you my take them on them, as I find it to be both relevant and practical for myself and my clients. You can decide whether you think it's helpful. More…

Karl Rove, Optimism and Me

Maybe some of you have known a lot about Karl Rove and his career with President Bush, but I didn't know too much until recently, when the news broke that he was resigning. I knew of him mostly as Bush's prime political strategist, the architect of his electoral victories, and a major Republican party operative, as they say. Some said he engaged in "dirty tricks," and some said he was brilliant. So I was kind of surprised to see him described as a perpetual optimist. I read about him in The New Yorker magazine and in some profiles on the Web. He was described as perpetually upbeat, sunny, and optimistic, right up to the day he announced his resignation. A real Jupiterian type, in other words--a jovial person. More…
