Difficult Days

The one law that does not change is that everything changes, and the hardship I was bearing today was only a breath away from the pleasures I would have tomorrow, and those pleasures would be all the richer because of the memories of this I am enduring. – Louis L’Armour Life presents us with difficult days. Some are more difficult than others and still some are so difficult they leave an indelible mark on our soul. The most difficult and scary thing for most of us is to have our doctor call us and give us some bad news.  My doctor called me last week to tell me I had cancer. Probably the scariest thing in the world to hear is that your health is being taken away by a disease.  I am afraid, angry, disappointed, sad, and depressed all in one emotional bundle. I am human with a human reaction to a deadly disease. More…

Commitment

One advantage of marriage, it seems to me, is that when you fall out of love with him, or he falls out of love with you, it keeps you together until you maybe fall in love again. –Judith Viorst Commitment means a sense of devotion.  It means we hang in there even when the going gets rough. My mother once told me that love is the ability to stay and weather through whatever life hands to you. As you weather through it together you learn the true meaning of love.  Love is not the infatuation of a new relationship.  Love comes through the trials and tribulations of life. More…

Insolvable Problems

The greatest and most important problems in life are all in a certain sense insolvable. They can never be solved but only outgrown. – Carl Jung Most of our problems in life are insolvable. To master our problems we need to resolve to simply transcend our problems and issues and simply let go. It is about detaching from the fear of losing control. We all want to control the outcome of life. But life is uncertain and it is the ability to live peacefully within the uncertainly of life that creates a state of peace and serenity. It is the path of yoga. More…

Accepting What We Can't Change

Accept that all of us can be hurt, that all of us can – surely will at times – fail. Other vulnerabilities, like being embarrassed or risking love, can be terrifying too.  I think we should follow a simple rule: if we can take the worst, take the risk. – Dr. Joyce Brothers To accept what life hands us on a moment to moment basis in a state of quietude, without emotion, with the ability to transcend is probably the most difficult path of being human.  We all attach ourselves to life through emotions, cravings, greed, ego, pride, and conceit. We are terrified to fail, to hurt, and to die. In fact our three greatest fears (from which all other fears arise) are fear of not being loved, fear of rejection, and fear of dying. If we could accept our worse possible fear from a place of balance and understanding we would soon realize that all of life is simply an opportunity to grow and learn. Life is meant to be a spiritually learning path made possible through earthly interactions. The risk of not living fully presents a far greater failure. More…

Infirmity

One of the besetting infirmities of living creatures is egotism. – A.J. Toynbee Infirmity means to have a personal failing.  It means we are not perfect human beings and each and every one of us at some time experiences the process of failure.  The ego is the mechanism that sets us up for the biggest failures of life. Change

t is only an error in judgment to make a mistake, but it shows an infirmity in character to adhere to it when discovered. – Christian Bovee We all make mistakes in life. We choose the wrong path, the wrong partner or the wrong vocation. It is the ability to understand the error of our judgment and then to correct the action through positive change that is the nature of positive judgment It is so easy to get stuck in a rut, feel sorry for yourself, and never take the action needed to move on.  We all love comfort and convenience. Decisions

You don’t get to choose how you’re going to die. Or when. You can only decide how you’re going to live. Now. - Joan Baez Living in the here and now is the secret to living a full and successful life. The past is behind us and the future is yet to be realized.  The present moment is all that really exist.  It is so easy to write these words and quite another thing to live by them.  More…

Appreciation

That daily life is really good one appreciates when one wakes from a horrible dream, or when one takes the first outing after a sickness. Why not realize it now? – William Lyon PhelpsWhen I was much younger I was complaining about how depressed I was and how my life was not what I wanted it to be. A doctor (my fiancé at the time) looked at me and said, “The day you cannot put your feet on the ground and get out of bed is the day you have a problem. What are you complaining about?”  I never forgot that day or his words of wisdom. More…
