Viagra for Women? Could the Little Blue Pill Be Right for You?

Millions of middle-aged men have used Viagra in order to improve erections and enhance their sex lives. Ever since the drug was first released in 1998 there has been talk about the possible benefits for women suffering from sexual dysfunction. Certainly Pfizer (and other pharmaceutical companies) would like to expand their sales to the other half of the human population. Once a prescription drug is approved for at least one indication, physicians are free to prescribe it for any other disorders or symptoms for which they believe it would be effective, a practice called off-label prescribing. Now some doctors are prescribing sildenafil (Viagra) off-label for women with sexual dysfunction. More…

When Grandkids Are Abused: What Are the Signs? What Can We Do?

With 5 grown children and 11 grandchildren it’s difficult to get everyone together. Carlin and I visited my daughter and her three kids over the holidays. As usual the kids were rambunctious and full of energy. The oldest just turned 15 and the other two are 9 and 7. Like brothers and sisters do, they fight and tease each other. But something seemed different this time. More…

Hey Guys, Are You Depressed and Don't Know It?

My wife, Carlin, and I walked tentatively into the nicely restored old building to attend the “family weekend.” Our son had been in treatment for a drug problem and we were there to learn and offer support. As part of the weekend experience, all the family members were given various questionnaires to fill out. One was a depression questionnaire. We dutifully filled it out and my wife scored “high” while I scored “low.” More…

Is the U.S. About to Collapse? Could It Be a Good Thing?

Every day, it seems, there is disturbing news about the stability of the country. The housing crisis has lead to concerns about the future of the entire economic system. As the gulf coast is battered by one storm after another, we are reminded of the predictions of scientists who warned about global climate instability. Now a new book by Dmitry Orlov, Reinventing Collapse, suggests that the U.S. is vulnerable to the same forces that brought down the Soviet Union. More…

The Unholy Trinity: What We Can Do To Survive and Prosper

The "unholy trinity" is a worst case scenario where three global problems occur at the same time to create widespread disruption to environmental, political and economic systems. It doesn’t take a crystal ball to look into today’s headlines and recognize that we are in deep trouble. In fact, what we are seeing is the end of an unsustainable world based on the pursuit of empire and the birth of a new earth-centered world based on cooperative local economies. Here’s what you need to know in order to survive and prosper in this new world. More…

Why High Stress is Killing Men

Emmet Thompson was 51 when he suddenly found himself struggling for breath, his blood pressure dropping dangerously low, according to Nancy Churnin reporting in The Dallas Morning News. Before he knew it, he was in an ambulance, racing to the hospital with encephalitic shock. And no one was more surprised than Thompson when they finally discovered the cause. "They ruled out everything except stress," he says of the emergency room doctors. Are you a man who is living with high levels of stress? Are you a woman who worries that stress may be killing the man you love? More…
