Foods That Can Help Ailments

It is true that we are what we eat -- and when our health deteriorates, it often comes down to the foods we eat, or don't eat. Food experts Vicki Edgson and Ian Marber say it's a matter of pinning down the problem and then picking out the proper food to relieve it.

For instance, if you suffer from memory loss, say the two authors of "Food Doctor" (Collins and Brown), the reason could be anything from environmental pollutants to nutrient deficiencies. Their food solution recommendations include corn, calf's liver, eggs, lentils, raisins, brewer's yeast, soya beans and fish.

Allergies such as hay fever and skin irritations can be brought on by poor liver function, pollution, adrenal stress and lack of digestive enzymes, among other things. Edgson and Marber say food solutions include grapefruit, plums, kale, broccoli, onions, mackerel and chicken -- and if you have sandwiches for lunch, make sure you alternate the type of bread and fillings daily to prevent intolerance brought on by a repetitive diet.

If you find yourself feeling tired all the time, you could be suffering from food allergies, low blood pressure, low thyroid function, a limited diet or poor blood-sugar management, they say. Possible food solutions include potatoes (the juice provides energy), bananas (good for sleep) and cashew nuts (for vitality). Or for a quick energy surge, go for egg noodles, grapes, duck or veal.
