Love Those Apples

Science now confirms an apple a day really does help keep the doctor away. The News from a study at the University of California-Davis finds that both apple juice and apples are loaded with health-helping phytonutrients.

Phytonutrients are plant compounds thought to possess disease preventative properties such as slowing the oxidation of bad cholesterol. Oxidation is thought to be a key event leading to build-up of plaque in arteries, culminating in blockage and heart disease.

Researchers found both apple juice and fresh apple components contain significant amounts of phytonutrients -- and the antioxidant effect from the apple phytonutrients was separate and distinct from that associated with vitamin C, often added to commercial apple juices.

Scientists say their findings confirm that apples should be part of a healthy diet. Dr. Eric Gershwin says, "If you went out and you ordered a hamburger, I would really be happy if you washed down that hamburger with apple juice."
