Public health educators say Americans should be taking significant daily doses of Vitamins E and C, calling them "powerful antioxidants" that can help ward off disease and help maintain health.
Adults should be getting as much Vitamin C as possible from produce, but also should be taking 250 to 500 milligrams daily as a supplement and vitamin E intake is recommended from 200 to 800 international units daily, the educators say.
The University of California's School of Public Health Wellness Letter takes some dietary supplement manufacturers to task for raising "false hopes and false fears" in advertising, but says many supplements "are highly beneficial" and do come in standard doses.
The newsletter reported on 30 dietary supplements in its August issue. Editors note the Wellness Letter has been reporting on the benefits of the supplements since 1995.
