Whether you have full or partial dentures, you now enjoy a healthy smile. You may be considering getting dentures or are a new denture wearer. What are the important things that you should understand about dentures? What can you expect during the adjustment/healing period? How often do you visit your dentist or prosthodontist?

Need Help for pre-planning meals after extractions & lower dentu
Long story short I was very sick for about 2 years losing weight rapidly (bottomed out at 76lbs) then finally diagnosed with bleeding ulcers, reflux, aspirin poisining & a stomach bacterial infection. I have managed to gain back to 98lbs (Im 5'2 and my "healthy" weight is around 100) and need to be proactive about my diet and getting as many calories as possible - I am having 9 lower teeth pulled and a partial lower denture done this week. If anyone has any ideas of things I can prepare ahead and freeze or how you handled this situation I would be very grateful. Thanks
upper and lower
Had all my teeth pulled and now have upper and lower dentures. Minus all the denture problems, my concern is that my lower lip protrudes alot and the upper lip protrudes a little less than the lower. The protrusion is such that my entire appearance is different. without going into details, can anyone tell me if they have had this or similar problems. My dentist insists everyone has these problems. It just seems if you search for a dentist, they all claim to be the expert denture professional!
Aveoplasty....what?
I have had an upperplate for almost 2 yrs now..it has never fit right and causes extreme pain when i wear them. I have been to 3 different dentist. Final diagnosis is a gum surgery called aveoplasty. I guess it is where they cut your gums and saw to smooth your upper dental ridge. Has anyone ever had this done?? If so P P P Please..respond lol. I am scheduled to have this in late July.
Thanks!!!
Scared to Death>>>>
I have an upper denture now and haven't had problems with them for ten years. Now I guess it is about time to worry about getting the lower plate. I have put it off as long as I can. I am afraid they will fall out, as they are getting loose. No more keeping them. I really don't know where to start. I want to have them put in immediately. Wouldn't be caught dead without them! Will any good dentist do or do you have to go to a denturist? What do they cost now? Any ideas would be appreciated.
soon hoping to be full denture wearer
i am a lower partial denture wearer consisting of five teeth. i have also lost four upper back teeth.therefore you can see why i am hoping for this to happen.
Kissing and dentures
I have a very strange question to ask but I really need an answer and soon! I became a denture wearer 4 months ago.My dentist removed most of my upper and lower teeth.Kept 4 uppers that were good and put a double crown on two of them. The bottoms will soon have the posts implanted so that the denture will be in place better. This has cost me a mere fortune but I have had no trouble eating and my smile is wonderful(or so people tell me).Now as to my problem...I have the man of my dreams..my first love from 36 yrs ago coming to visit me in 3 weeks and even though he knows of all my dental problems I am terrified of the intimate part of our relationship! What is it like kissing with dentures..they still feel a bit foreign in my mouth and I dread the thought of him seeing me without my teeth. Please someone answer me soon! Thanks!
Please do not worry about
Please do not worry about kissing with your dentures. I have had mine, both upper and lower, for over thirty years and have never had a problem. Well, except before I got used to them and tried to bite into an apple. You have to bite down rather than up on an apple when you have dentires. You can go ahead and kiss without worry, as long as they are not loose and would fall out, which is extremely rare. I would never want you to worry about your densures, so I'm only telling you my own experience to try and help you from worrying. Go ahed, kiss all you want. Are you ashamed that you have dentures? Please do not be. There is n shame in wearing dentures.

My teeth were not only ugly
with gum disease, but also
the front teeth were bucked
with a gap between them. I'm
60 and a little over a year ago, against the advice of my
own dentist who felt they could be saved, I went to another dentist who agreed they were very bad and most needed to come out. This dentist pulled them all out save for 3 teeth at the bottom which he suggested I leave in to secure the lower dentures. The whole
procedure from the x-rays to
the temporary dentures and then the permanent ones took
about a year. Initially there
was a lot of pain and getting
adjusted to them over a few
months, during which time I
frequently had to return to my
dentist to further adjust the
dentures. He was so patient
and understanding; he's now my
new dentist. Today, the dentures are so comfortable,
they feel like my own. More
important, my smile is beautiful and I feel more confident. So, Grandannie, go
for it. You won't regret it.
Good luck.
need dentures
I have always had a lot of trouble with my teeth. Last year after a lot of pain from an upper front tooth, the dentist said I would probably need to have them pulled. I just turned 50, and know I should get this done, but I am really scared. My teeth are ugly and I am trying to tell myself, that I will not have to hide my smile anymore, and can wear pretty lipstick. But I am afraid it will look like horse teeth, you know real big. My real teeth are real small. I guess I just need some encouragement, and I need to get it done. I also have gum disease and a dentist told me a few years ago, that I would have trouble with dentures because of that. Does anyone else have a problem with dentures and have gum disease?
I had really bad gum
I had really bad gum disease over thirty years ago. I too had small teeth, and they were quite bucked. Well, I went ahead and had them all pullled, in the hospital. Afterwards I was in a lot of pain for a few days, but that went away. I had to wait a whole year before I got my dantures because the gums had to go back down to normal. But I grant you, it was worth it. I no longer have bucked teeth and the dental surgeon I went to adjusted the size that was right for my mouth and gums. A good dental surgeon will do the same for you. Since then, my dentures have been so air tight that I've never had a problem. Well, the lowers are not actually aiir tight, but they do not fall out. Please do not be afraid to have yours done. You will really be glad you did. And no, you will not look ugly, nor will your dentures be ugly. I can grant you that. But please, if your dentist, or dental surgeon tells you that you will have to wait until your gums go back down to normal, be patient. Otherwise, you will find yourself with pain every time you were your dentures. My older sister had that problem. She did not wait, therefore, she could not even wear hers without pain so she did not wear them. As a result she wore her gums down so badly that she could not even wear dentures anymore. And, by the way, don't let anyone tell you that if you get them all pulled you will have nothing to hold the dentures in. That is just not true. If you get good ones, they will stay just fine and you will not have to put any gunk in to keep them in. I never have. Hope this has helped you and you will not be scared to do it.

I too am terrified of dentists. But my teeth were so ugly and bad for the pastfour years. I finally found a dentist in Williamsburg, VA that is great. Now I have a smile that won't quit, and small teeth, too. Sue
need dentures
I have full upper dentures and gum disease. I've had my uppers for 8 years now, and all I can say is that is was the best dental decision I ever made! I've never been happier with my smile, and I've never had a lick of trouble with them. I'd say - go for it!
lower dentures
I've worn full upper dentures for years now, and they are just wonderful! I only wish I had them years and years ago rather than going through all the pain, agony, and expense to 'saving' my teeth!
Anyways, my lower teeth are in a sorry state - at least what's left of them, and it is obvious that a full set of lower dentures is a given. Yet, I am concerned as I've heard so much bad PR re lower dentures and to avoid them as along as possible.
I'd like to hear from some lower denture folks so I can determine whether to wait, or to go get them now.
Who on earth ever told you
Who on earth ever told you to avoid lower dentures? What you've been told is so wrong it's pathetic. I've worn both full upper and lower for over thirty years, and I'll tell you, I'm so glad that I did it. No, for heaven sake no, don't listen to the naysayers. You will be so glad that you went for the full lowers. Sure, it may take a little while to get used to them, especially when eating an apple, but that's no problem. You WILL get used to them in no time. Hey, when I ttried to eat an apple, mine, both upper and lower popped out. But that showed me how to actually eat an apple, from the top down, not the bottom up. For some it's the bottom up though. If your lowers are as bad as you say they are, you'll be so glad you got new ones, I grant you. I still can not understand why anyone would try to scare you away from getting them. Please don't listen to them. Again, you will be so happy once you get them, and get used to them. It doesn't take long. So please, for your own sake, get those lowers. Think about how good you'll look, as well as feel. okay?
Lower Dentures
I wear full uppers and with
regard to the lowers, I had
3 teeth that were good. My
dentist advised that I leave
these in to secure the lower
dentures. I was reluctant at
first, but a year later now,
I'm glad I listened to him
after reading about the
experience of others due to problems with their lower
dentures. My advice is this: If any of your teeth can be saved, don't have them all pulled. I have 3 teeth at the bottom on the side so the clamp doesn't show
much when I'm talking or eating. Since getting my
dentures, I've never been happier.

re:lowers
hydrin:
Is there some secret that I'm missing out on about getting the adhesive to hold for longer than a few hours? Once in a while I do have them hold almost too well, but usually I have to replace the adhesive after about 3 hours. If I don't, the lower denture wobbles around and is very uncomfortable. My dentist tells me that they are not too loose. Do you just have a partial or is it a full lower denture?
lowers
I only wear lowers and I have not had a problem wearing them from the first day( and mine do not fit well) so don,t worry the adhesives hold very very well sometimes I have pry them out !
growing
I am a 32 year old male who, last year had my upper left third molar removed by a dentist. This week, I was really amazed to discover that it is growing again! anybody comment on this!!!
growing
Hi -
If you think you cannot grow a third tooth - think again!
My grandmother had a third tooth come in after years and years of wearing dentures, and had it removed.
Both me and my son, also have 3rd teeth emerging as well! This may be the situation in your case, OR it may be a chip of the tooth that got left behind, and it is just pushing its way out. If it's not bothering you you may just want to leave well enough alone.
Too bad our scientists can't tap the 3rd tooth gene! I sure could use a new set of teeth!
Adhesion loss
I have trouble with the adhesive dissolving after a couple of hours and don't know if there is any solution. My dentist told me that it was because of hot liquids/foods, but I find that it doesn't matter if I drink/eat or not...the adhesive is still gone after about 2 hours. It is a real problem for me because I am a surveyor working out in the field and can't be carrying fixodent in my pocket! The dentures (lower) become very uncomfortable after they have lost the adhesion. Any suggestions??
adhesion loss
I had a few problems that you described. My advice is try several different adhesive types. I tried fixodent and my dentures never held for more than a couple of hours. Super polygrip-holds for 12 hours for me.
Help getting out the glue
I am a very recent dental wearer my self. I find using a solution of mouth wash and warm water as a rinse and then brush with a firm tooth brush works. Then I rinse again.
Loose Dentures
hi your dentist isnt telling you the truth. as time goes on your gums will scrink even more and your dentures may become even looser. you need to make him fill fix that or go to another dentist that can help you. they can fill in some area's with more denture material to makethem tighter. he may have to send them out to havethe work done.
hope this helps.
Can't get the glue out
I recently got top and bottom dentures. One of the biggest problems I am having is getting the glue out of my mouth after I remove the dentures at night. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
Getting the glue out
This is for Joanieb42. I had
to use an adhesive with my
immediate dentures after my
gums began shrinking. Try using Arm & Hammer baking soda
on a firm toothbrush followed
by toothpaste. Afterward, rinse warm water or mouthwash. This worked wonders for me, and I hope it will for you, too. I was fitted with my
permanent dentures 2 months ago and after a few adjustments over a month's time, they feel great. I don't need the adhesive now.

Cant get glue out
hi i havent found a way to get it out i really dont use that much so its really not a problem. usually if you take them out and eat something it disapears with the food.
Loose Dentures
I received a set of dentures a few weeks ago they were made by a denturest. How ever they are not retentive with out lots of adhesive. The denturest said they will develop retentivness in time.
With out adhesive they fall right out.
Do lowers take longer?
it's almost time to have all my remaining lower teeth extracted (disease & medication have caused them to spontaneously drop out, leaving the roots in). People who wear lowers tell me they are impossible! Isn't there some way besides adhesives to put the denture in and still remove for daily cleaning? Is it possible to insert a screw like device with a ball that would protrude above the gum and make the denture so it will snap onto the balls?
years of wear
Just now getting fitted for new dentures. Old ones were made in 1952; yes, they are 50 years old and the dentist was absolutely amazed. Only problem with them is that the teeth are worn so much I can't bite anymore.
Denture Stain
One of the most effective and inexpensive methods I recommend in my practice is to soak your denture with water and a couple of capfuls of vinegar. The vinegar is a weak organic acid that will help breakdown the tartar and stain buildup.Just use a stiff brush (not metal)and most of it should come off . Cleaning EVERYDAY with a mild liguid detergent and brush also helps with continued buildup and stain.
Please remeber to rinse your dentures very thoroughly with water however before placing them back in your mouth.

denture plaque
I need a product that will remove plaque/caicum build up on dentures..mine get reallly bad//alos food/beverages to avoid getting on them
denture plaque
Try Ban-O-Stain which can be found in most drug stores and Wal-mart as well. However, you shouldn't have such a problem if you clean your dentures each day.
OLD Dentures
I have a dear friend who has worn dentures for 15 years. They are worn down short, fit poorly, and look so 'phoney.' How do I tell him? He is a wonderful guy and sure don't want to offend or hurt him. He is only 60 but looks 75 because of the worndown falsies??
Early or Late Dentures ?
Immediate dentures are better, especially if you have to work and be seen in public. The dentures also help control bleeding from extractions and to form the gums so as to fit the dentures. Because there will be some shrinkage of bone and gums, there will have to be some adjustments and possibly a reline, usually after two or three months.
You will begin to eat soft food immediately, and you should be able to eat almost normally in a couple of weeks or less. I could eat almost anything, including meat (turkey for Christmas dinner) in less than a month. I couldn't have done that, if I was still waiting to get my dentures.
On the other hand, your initial fit will probably be better if you wait six or eight weeks to get the dentures. If your gums are in bad shape, the dentist may recommend waiting. If you feel that you can go without teeth for that long, it may be a reasonable option.
I'm quite pleased with my dentures. They look great, fit well and function almost as well as my natural teeth. I am a professional person and couldn't have gone toothless for six or eight weeks.
early or late dentures
i would have them put right in i had my teeth pulled 2 weeks ago and had dentures put right in the same day it helps to keep something in your mouth and it does not swell as bad or mine did not
it is really weird feeling not having teeth in your mouth
Early or Late Dentures ?
I have some people telling me to get dentures put in right after having teeth pulled. Others say wait six weeks to two months. Which is the best way to go ?
Bone loss
I am 78 years old. When I was 25 I had to have ALL of my teeth pulled, and dentures. Over the years I suffered bone loss, and at age 63 I chose to have subcutaneous implant. This consisted of a frame made to fit over what bone I had left on my lower jaw, with 4 posts protruding above the gums. The lower denture snaps onto the four posts. This was expensive, but I have been able to eat anything I wish, include chew ice. This is the answer to problems one has when the lower jaw can no longer hold the lower plate in place.
Gagging
Does anyone else have a gagging problem? I have had dentures for two years as of last May but the gagging is so bad that I can stand to wear them for only a few hours at a time and would rather be shot than eat in them. (I can drink with no problem.) I was able to eat with the first set although I didn't completely get over the gagging before the dentist decided that they needed relined after a month. However she could not even get the uppers in my mouth when she got them back from the lab. She buffed them out enough to be able to get them in while she remade another upper (which took a couple of months and I couldn't completely close my mouth the whole time). For some reason she made the new upper so that I had a slight overbite (although my original teeth were this way, the first denture set she made me weren't). Now every time I close my mouth it feels like they are being crammed down my throat. She said that there was nothing more she could do and that I would get used to it. This has been the most horrible experience of my entire life. I have finally gotten brave enough to try starting over with another dentist but am terrified that my gagging is incurable. You do not realize how much of society revolves around eating until you have such a handicap.
GAGGING
Hi Loreleis
I too have had a problem with gagging...usually when I least expect it, like when I am talking to someone on the phone at work. I have been totally miserable and can't wait to get them out when I get home. Also I stay nauseated all day long, I am assuming because I feel like I am going to gag all the time. I have been conversing with a denturist online. Unfortunately, Florida doesn't allow denturists to practice here. Go to www.denture.com and he should be able to tell you if denturists practice in your state. They say that is the way to go because denturists specialize in dentures. I also feel that everything smells and tastes the same...like raw meat. Anyone else have these feelings or have any tips? I lost my life when I got this upper plate and I am very resentful
gagging cure
If I were you, I would find a new dentist and then a lawyer. While denture making is an art it should not be practiced by the incompetent and it sounds like that is exacly what you have. Gagging is caused by dentures that go too far back in the mounth, whether on the roof of your mouth or at the rear where your wisdom teeth would be. As for the overbite, if you had one before, your dentures should have one.
Find someone who has dentures and get some recommendations or find a denturist whose speciality is fitting, that is all they do. Good luck

hello
I have had dentures for about 6 months now. Both upper and lower. Iam still trying to get use to them. What I would like to know is why when I use a adhesive the lowers don't seem to stay in place as long as the uppers. They loss the adhesive in about 2 to 3 hours. Is there anything I can do?
Try this...
Hi,
i know where you're coming from. got mine about a yr ago...the best adhesive i've found is this NEW Fixodent Complete... no, they didnt pay me to say that... but really...it does work better.
now, nothing makes them stay in as good as the uppers... and i do have to refresh the lowers at least once a day, usually after lunch.. then i'm good to go for another 4 to 5 hrs... sometimes longer... i've tried all sorts of stuff, this really works the best for me...
hope it does for you.. hang in there, you will get used to it...
