Osteoporosis Support
thank you!
for this valuable information. I just read a report that said that 2-10% of the supplements you swallow in pill form (liquids are another story) are used by your body--the rest goes into the sewer system.
My mother had osteoporosi, I don't want to go down that same dark alley! My OB/GYM tells me to get my calcium and magnesium from "foods" rather than supplements. So I have a cup of yogurt in the morning, banana, tofu, protein powder (Slim Fast), wheat germ, etc. in a "shake" -- geels like someone has given me a B-12 shot in the arm within fifteen minutes. (I still take glucosaminechondroitin.)
So, then, what do we do about farmland that has been "sprayed" with insecticides by greedy corporations who have put small farmers out of business? We pay, in NYC, at least $1 more for anything labelled "organic" -- and I'm growing more and more leery every day of "eating out" in restaurants where someone else handles my food. (With hepatitis "C" being transmitted, I would rather dine at home; wash your hands each and every time you come home from being outdoors.)
I was diagnosed with severe
I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis in 1998 when I had a DEXA bone mineral density scan to see if I was "at risk" before my doc would put me on Evista. He called and told me I'd flunked the test...started me on miacalcin nasal spray, Evista and calcium supplements. I go back Tuesday to see if I'm making any progress on the bone thinning.
It'll be interesting to see what the results are.
Hi gingersnap. I'd be

Bone Density
Dear Bondugan, I am assuming you have had a bone density test. Two years ago, a bone density test showed that I had osteoporosis. I was put on Evista. Also 1,500 mil of calcium with vit D daily. I just had another bone density test. I'm happy to say that it came back "normal". I had chosen not to take estrogen because of a family history of breast cancer. The Evista appears to have worked. You might ask your doctor about it. Good luck and don't give up hope. Jamiesong.
I WAS ALSO DIAGNOSED WITH OSTEOPINIA
I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH OSTEPINIA IN APRIL OF 1999. I STARTED TAKING FOSAMAX ON MAY 1ST OF THAT YEAR. I WENT FOR MY FOLLOW-UP BONE DENSITY TEST THIS PAST JANUARY AND FOUND THAT I HAD A 4.4 IMPROVEMENT OF BONE DENSITY IN MY SPINE AND A 1.1 PERCENT IN MY HIP. I PRAISE THIS DRUG. MY DOCTOR WAS IS AS THRILLED ABOUT THIS RESULT AS I AM. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYBODY WITH OSTEOPINIA OR OSTEOPOROSIS ASK THEIR DOCTOR IF IT WOULD BE OF HELP THEM. I FOR ONE FEEL THAT THE SOONER YOU TAKE FOSAMAX WHEN YOU HAVE THESE PROBLEMS THE BETTER. I AM SO GREATFUL THAT THIS WAS FOUND WHILE IT WAS IN THE OSTEOPINIA STAGE AND THAT I WAS STARTED RIGHT AWAY ON FOSAMAX. THANK YOU, NANCY
Osteoporosis
Hi There, Really like this column about osteoporosis. Was told in March of this year that my bone density test reveiled I have osteoporosis. I am 45yrs old, exercise, swim and walk five or six times per week. Unbelievable news to absorb for me. There a lots of good books out there, and I found it helped learning all I could about this disease. Take Fosmax every morning along with boosting my calicum + Vit D. supplements. Nice to read infor. from other people like myself. Life is great so enjoy everyday to the fullest when you can. Thanks for being there and sharing.
Love to all, keep smiling!
My experience with osteoporosis...
Hi..I am 29 years old and as of Feb. of 2001, I had a fracture to my right hip which caused me to be off work a little over 3 months.
During this time I had a bone density test done and my bones were basically that of a 70 year old woman.. Everyone at my work could not believe someone of my age would be dealing with this. I now take Fosamax 70mg on a weekly basis; I have boosted my calcium and vitamin D intake..but my hip still hurts. I just wanted to share my story and hopefully meet some people coping with osteoporosis...anything that I can learn or find to help I am willing to do...
Love to all...
MS and osteoporosis
I am 48 and have Multiple Sclerosis, Scoliosais, and Osteopina. I take Evista, (I have not gone through menopause) drink a glass of milk everyday, take Vitamin D and Calcium. I had a compression fracture 7 years ago. I was still walking at the time. I cannot exercise my lower body. I am in a wheelchair. Is there anything else I can do? I nerver drank milk growing up and had several fractures growing up. Now I am paying for it.

Severe Osteoporosis
I am 61 & have osteo which has improved due to Foxamax from 3 1/2 yrs ago. I play 18 holes of golf 4-5 times wk; workout 40 min. daily; walk 4 mi. daily; get enough calcium & D plus am very aware of my diet. Have been exercising since I was 26 on a daily basis so can't believe that I have the disease. However, my mother & grandmother both had it & ended up in wheel chairs...my biggest fear..due to breaking a hip. I have no pain whatsoever in my body...am very flexible & my back is ramrod straight. Do I have a chance to get thru life without a disc fracture? Pls. let me know your experiences or what knowledge you might have. Thanks....bondugan@aol.com
Dowager's Hump
Just within the last year and a half I have developed what is called "dowager's hump." My doctor says that I have osteopina (I think that's what he called it), which is not full-blown osteoporosis, but is bone diminishment. Are there any exercises that can get rid of this, or is it just something that you have to live with. I am on hormone-replacement therapy, and I take calcium supplements, but it may not be enough to take care of the problem. Thanks for any help!
Dowager's Hump
Hi Scrunch. I have just purchased a book called Strong Women Strong Bones by Miriam E Nelson PhD and Sara Wernick PhD. I quote... "everything you need to know about preventing and treating osteoporosis". It includes chapters about diet,bone-boosting workouts, medication and lots more. From what I can see so-far it looks very good, so will certainly be following the exercise routine.
Hope this is of some help. I bought the book in England, but I guess you should be able to get it via the net.

Don't Let a Back-Room Deal Kill Patients' Rights!
Last fall, the U.S. House of Representatives courageously passed the Patients' Bill of Rights to protect you and your family from HMO abuses. Now a small group of Senators and Representatives will be meeting behind closed doors to decide whether to cave in to the powerful insurance, business and HMO lobbyists. If these lobbyists get their way, the House bill will be sabotaged, and HMO bureaucrats will continue to make important medical decisions for patients and doctors. Your family deserves better.
A congressional decision on patients' rights may be reached any day now. Send a free e-mail to your representatives NOW by visiting http://congress.nw.dc.us/pac . Tell your members of Congress that you support a strong patients' bill of rights, that you want an end to HMO abuses, and that you are watching them closely.

A new drug to rebuild bone mass
I am glad to see some new friends here. A have just read some good news concerning osteoporosis in a Hungarian periodical. I wonder wether anybody of you also heard about it.
According to some very recent announcements of dr Lawrence Riggs of the Mayo Clinic of Rochester they discovered that some cholesterine reducing compounds (this may not be the precise translation of it), the so called statines are able to increase bone density. Experiments had been carried out on rats with drugs called Mevacor and Zocor.
If experiments on humans prove to be also successful, this will be the first medicine that will be able to rebuild bone mass as recent medicines can just slow down the pace of bone loss, the article says.

Elizabeth, Thanks so much for your understanding and encouraging words. I am so thankful I found this forum.
Can you recommend exercises that work well for you?

Women's Health Initiative
Rose24, I too found out about my osteoporosis through the WHI! Could not be part of the study you were in because I was already on HRT and on low fat diet. The first studies were to connect fatty diets with heart disease and to see if HRT helped prevent osteo. So they just monitored me for a few years. Then they started on to connect tooth loss with osteo. I joined that one and had a full body bone scan on a DEXA machine. Found out that at the tender age of 60, I have full blown osteoporosis. -4.2 lumbar, -3.8 hip. My Dr. put me on Fosamax, kept me on the HRT, increased my calcium to 1500 mg. and told me to walk. I checked internet and have done enough research to know that the most important thing one can do is WEIGHT BEARING exercise. Am now going to a gym 3 days a week, walk two miles too. Swimming and biking are not very helpful to osteo as they are not weight bearing, but are great for the heart. Don't have another scan until July, so don't know how much improvement there is, but I sure feel better, and look better too. I had never exercised, other than chasing five sons around, am 5'1", white, fair skinned, smoked for many years (quit at 50) and so was a prime candidate. But insurances here would not pay for bone density testing unless you broke a bone - in which case it is generally too late and you probably have it! Ridiculous. So, ladies, push your doctors if you fit the profile and get tested, even if you have to pay for the darn test. It is never too late to do something about it, but the longer you wait, the harder it is.
I suspect that the no
I suspect that the no symptoms happen more often than not. I had to have a bone density test to see if I was "at risk" before the doctor would prescribe Evista which I wanted after hearing about it so much. He then called and said I'd "flunked" the test...I was beyond "at risk"...and had severe osteoporosis in my hips. I suppose if I hadn't asked about the Evista, it wouldn't have been known and I'd have learned of the osteoporosis when I fell and broke a hip or whatever. I'd rather know now.Gingersnap
Gingersnap, I have no
Gingersnap, I have no symptoms either. A friend has back pain with osteopoenia, which I suspect is not caused by her bone problems, however. I think most of us have no discomfort with it until it reaches such a severe state that you break a rib when you cough. I am never going to get to that place in my life as I will continue to exercise and get stronger and take whatever medication they come up with. Like you, a positive outlook is the best help of all.
The Silent Disease
Linda, it was the same with me -- no symptoms at
all. I forget how I got into that Raloxifene
study research, but must have found out somehow
that something was wrong. I know, it seems like
a brutal blow from the Fates suddenly to find
oneself losing bone and with a disease with so
horrid a name and prognosis! But hang in there,
Linda -- you will soon find fellow sufferers,
and medications, and exercises, and you'll feel
better and part of a community. Hugs.

the silent disease
Just read the question from Ro regarding symphoms of O and your answer. I had no signs that I know of - I had my ovaries and uterus removed at age 39 due to endometriosis and immiedately was given HRT. I am now age 60. Ten years ago I had a auto accident and received a compression fracture in my spine. I did have a severe jolt yet now I wonder if O contributed to the fractures - vertebrae on either side of compression were cracked.
I requested a bone density scan about 4 months ago and found I have O in my hips and lumbar area. I was devastated. I was given Evista. My diet has always included soy and dairy products, vitamins and minerals and extra C and calcium. I know that strength training and exercise will help me yet I am depressed with diagnosis and struggle with lack of motivation.
I have always had an office job sitting behind a desk and my hobbies include needlework and crafts which involves sitting - probably contributing to bone loss.
Thank you for giving me this forum to "vent" my feelings. God Bless you and best wishes to everyone of you.

Women's Health Initiative--Osteoporosis Study
In 1996, I joined a research group study sponsored by Eli Lilly & Co., a well-known drug company. I was in the study (a double-blind study, wherein no one at all knew which medication any of us were taking) for four years. We met with the research doctor and his assistant once a month, then once every six months. We were tested each time for blood pressure, for various blood chems, for psychological condition, height and weight; and, we received a bone density test each time. The test medications given were @1300 mg calcium, Vitamin D, and Raloxifene (or a placebo--we never knew for sure) We had to keep the research team up to date on any illnesses or accidents we might have suffered. I fell several times, and had assorted injuries, and duly reported them. At the end of the four years (just last February, 1999), my bone density had improved by 18%! So I was ready to tout Raloxifene to the world. When I finished, the doctor recommended I take Fosamax for improving bone density, BUT you take it in the morning before breakfact and you stay upright for a good hour so that it won't return back up the esophagus. So I dropped it.
I continue to take calcium and Vitamin D every day, plus lots of vegetables and fruits (and several other medications for CHF, COPD, osteoarthritis, etc., et al.
Slightly degenerated disks, a slowly healing broken knee and broken toes, etc., make it hard to walk outside, but I do bed exercises and dancing in the house, and it seems to me I recover my former agility slowly but surely. I'm 75, a long-time "tomboy", and very active over the years; and I believe all those years of vigorous activity has helped a lot.
I'm due for another bone density test in a few months, and I have crossed all my fingers and toes, and wished on evening stars, and so on, that the old osteop has gone away.
And I wish that for all of you, too.

Osteopenia
Has anyone received a diagnosis of osteopenia?
I had uterine cancer 18 years ago with treatment at that time of: radiation, cesium implant and surgery.
I cannot take HRT.
I would be interested in hearing from people who have not taken HRT but used other methods to re-build bone density.
Thank you for any responses.

I know a lot of women in an Osteoporosis discussion at SeniorNet who have been diagnosed with the milder form of osteoporosis..called osteopenia...and they're often put on the same regime that those of us with osteoporosis are on...miacalcin or fosamax, calcium supplements, exercise, Evista, etc. What did your doctor recommend?Gingersnap
Jon: Please give us some
Jon: Please give us some citations to scientific research studies which bear out what you state above. I'm not interested in the views of a Vegetarian Farmer as authoritative. What does an LL.D degree have to do with being authoritative about chemical ingredients in dairy products and their affects on the human bodies? Where did Mr. Lyman earn this degree? [I assume he earned it, and it is not an honorary.] What was the title, please, of his dissertation? You make it sound as if cows live outside and are milked outside. They are washed thoroughly before milking, milk is stored in special refrigerated holding tanks on farms, etc. I don't think you've presented the true picture of a dairy farm who sells to commercial milk processors.Gingersnap

There are many different medicines for osteoporosis, you find interesting informartion on them if you read erlier postings in this forum. There are also some links there to sites about the disease. osteoporisis
just this week my gyn started me on a new product called evista. it is suppose to prevent it without the complications that estrogen cause. i had a very good bone density test so have a head start on holding it off for as long as i can.lucky enough to grow older and not lose my organs i believe has also helped.wish my blood pressure was as good as my bones.
Recent bone scan results.....
My gyn requested I have a bone density scan last month: it revealed I have osteoporosis in my (L) hip and osteopenia in my spine. I am Caucasian, petite (5 ft)...I had a total hysterectomy 20 yrs. ago & have
been on .625mg. Estrogen for the past 15 yrs. The phys. recommends I continue w/my current daily walking regimen, 1500mg. calcium & the hormone repl. But I am
still wanting to know if there is anything else that I can do to increase my bone density: I have heard of a flouride medication that some geriatric specialists use that increases bone density! Can you help me find out more? Thank you...dixied@surfsouth.com

Gingersnap,
Thanks for the correction, you must be right.
We have a winter here and no sunshine for more than 4 months, so I used to go into solarium as this is supposed to be very good for the bones. What kind of weather you have there now?
Alice and Tresya: I don't
Alice and Tresya: I don't think it's a bone scan you want to ask for. At least in the USA, a bone scan is done for things like locating the spread of cancer. What you get for Osteoporosis is a Bone Density test. It is not the same as a bone scan (at least as the terms are used in the USA). I have had both tests. They are very different. Bone Density is a piece of cake compared to a bone scan. Gingersnap
Bone Scan
Thank you tresya for your reply. I will carry on living my life the way I do as I know this is one of the best ways to take care of myself and my well being. Glad to know I am doing all the right things. As for the scan I think I will ask my doctor again.
Many thanks. I wish you a very Happy New Year and a Happy New Year to everyone at thirdage. Jo

Happy New Year To All Of You!
ALICE7,
I understand your worries, athough you seem to have a good therapy to prevent the development of osteoporosis.
Did your doctor explain why he thinks you do not need a bone scan? As far as I know there are also some other methods (X-ray, urine test)to see whether somebody has osteoporisis, but the densiometric measurement is the most precise one to detect the changes occuring in bone density.
Re:information
Six years ago at the age of 40 I underwent a radical hysterectomy. I am on HRT and teststerone treatment.
My mother and grandmother both had osteoperosis and padgets disease, both bone crippling illnesess.
I excercise daily, weight bearing and swimmimg.
Do I still need to have a bone scan? My doctor does not seem to think I do, but still I worry.
I live in the UK and do not want to become housebound for the last 15 years of my life like my mother and grandmother. Please help. thanks Jo

I also took miacalcin for years without having any side effects, and axchieving very good results. I was taking it along with Alfa D, which is helping the absorption of calcium.

Miacalcin nasal spray
Good morning, friends
Had a Dr. appointment yesterday and she took me off the fosamax that I have been taking for the last 3 1/2 yrs. because of upper and lower back pain. We are going to try Miacalcin. I went on the web last night to read up on it,, but need to know from you anything not in the lit. that you may want to share. Any problems with blotting, fluid reten. etc.
Thanks,
Sharyne
Best results with not taking anything?
I was told by my doctor to have a break in taking miacalcin spray (I was on it for 4 years) and to take just calcium and vitamins. The bone scan after a half year pause showed the best ever result. I kept on not taking anything but calcium for another half year and bone scan showed the same good result. Now I was told to continue this way. Although I am happy with the good results, I find this somewhat strange. Does anybody had similar experiences?
I am 58 and I have severe
I am 58 and I have severe osteoporosis in my hips. I'm on miacalcin spray, 1500 mg calcium supplements, and Evista. I'm hoping this will help deter any hip fractures. The idea of that scares me badly, since I live in an area with a lot of snow and ice.

I DO have osteoporosis, and had five fractured verterbrae 3 years ago. Fosomax has done a miraculous job for me. I was recently switched to Evista. You could get a portion of your daily 1500 mg of Calcium need by food. E.g. one cup of skim milk contains 300 mg of Calcium. Postings number 25.1. contains a table on the calcium content of different food. According to my doctor Calcium overdosage is harmful, might result in the development of kidney stones.
I take Calcium effervescent tablets. Do you have such one in the States?

TracyO: Yours are probably different, but while my label says:"Liquid Filled Calcium '900'...in smaller letters it says 90 softgels (300 MG calcium) further down. The dosage is 3 softgels. So, each is worth only 300 mg...so I take 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening. These also come with '600' on the label, but I believe they're only 200 mg of calcium each. I've seen this same brand with '1200' on the label, but the amount of Vit D was lower, so I bought the '900'. I don't know if I'm doing the right thing, but it's what I'm doing! ;0)Gingersnap
Calcium Capsules
Hi Tresya and All, I was considered a high risk for
Osteoporosis. I was given a bone scan and was found to be on the verge of developing this disease. I was put on Fosamax and told to take 1500mg. of calcium a day.
In order to get the full benifits of calcium it is better to take it in liquid form. I take the liquid calcium capsules. I have only been able to find them in 600mg. I take three a day. Which brings it to 1800mg. a day. I do not take etsrogen. I am wondering if I may be taking too high a dosage of calcium.
Day of Osteoporosis
On the occasion of the Day of Osteoporosis the illness had a wide media coverage here in Hungary. The best thing I have heard is that bone density can be improved by 8-10%. A bad news was that children of today do not eat enough dairy products, so their bone mass can not develop properly resulting in a much higher risk of early osteoporosis.
Thank you,Gingersnap!! You
Thank you,Gingersnap!!
You said what I wanted to say, all one needs to do is look at the risk factors and you will know about osteo. Thanks again,
