What Is a Dream?

Nothing happens unless first a dream. --Carl Sandburg

Most people think of dreams as either some kind of unattainable fantasy, or as something they do in their sleep. Neither of these definitions are what I mean when speaking of dreams. I define dreams as the aspirations, desires, goals and hopes that you most want for yourself. Moreover, these are the kind of dreams you have while you are very much awake.

In truth, having it all -- a life you love, and the time and freedom to enjoy it -- couldn't be less complicated or more possible for anyone to achieve, at any time. That's the beauty of the simple three-step process that I've designed for my class, Making Your Dreams Come True. Take a look at how easy it is to apply to your life:

Step One: Get clear about what your dream is.
Step Two: Remove the obstacles to achieving it, especially your limiting beliefs.
Step Three: Allow the magic to happen.

Four Little Words
The word "dreams" has long been misinterpreted, as if dreams were like puffy white clouds in the sky -- beautiful, but unreachable. Yet the dictionary offers a very different interpretation not only of what dreams are, but of several other words that are important to the process of what it means to dream.

  • Dream: A fond hope or aspiration; to conceive of or devise.
  • Possibility: That which may or can be; that which may or can be done; that which is capable of existing; something that is possible.
  • Magic: Producing extraordinary results.
  • Beliefs: Opinions, judgments, attitudes.
It's interesting that the dictionary describes "dream" as a way to achieve your fond aspirations, which suggests possibility and hope, while most people have a sense of hopelessness and futility about their dreams. Yet, their dreams continue to live as an ember, flickering in the back of their minds.

I used to believe that anything was possible as long as I could figure out in advance how to do it. Eventually I realized this assumption was a limiting belief and that I was stopping myself from going for what I wanted, often before I even began. Now I believe that everything is possible as long as you believe it. My life is filled with opportunities galore, many that I surely would not have encountered if I was still operating within my old belief system.

Indeed, when you open up to the potential of having what you want, you enable extraordinary results (i.e., "magic") to appear in your life. "Extraordinary results" are not necessarily mystical, although they may be outside the bounds of what you've already experienced. When you clarify your goals and believe that everything is possible, the techniques in this class will seem like "magic" and will show up magically in your life. What Does It Take to Believe?AT&T, one of America's corporate giants, currently has a campaign for its employees called Ten Million Magical Moments. The telecommunications company knows that the use of magic, or simply allowing the magic to happen, produces extraordinary results. AT&T says, and I agree, that it's time to find a new way of speaking, thinking and doing things. Magic is one of the mechanisms to change. Are you using the magic? Are you letting it flow in your life? Sometimes just getting out of the way, not controlling every little detail, allows magic to happen. Remember step three of my formula: "Let the Magic Happen." Your beliefs are what you hold to be true. They include the opinions, attitudes and judgments you've formed over a lifetime. Yet, they're not set in stone. A healthy and well-adjusted person considers all the options, angles and, yes, possibilities. Attitudes and beliefs can change when they are significant and central to the issue -- in this case, to either living a dream-filled life or one of missed opportunities.
When you can recognize and isolate your beliefs, you can transform your life, making changes for the better. Are your beliefs empowering or impeding you? Embrace the beliefs that will support you in having what you want, and discard those that are hindering you. In other words, make them relevant by aligning them to help you move forward with your dreams. You can start making your dreams come true today, right now, by being clear about what a dream is, by believing that everything is possible, by allowing the magic to come into your life, and enabling yourself to produce extraordinary results.
