You had the pleasure of interviewing Hugh Downs, host of ABC's 20/20. He has been a favorite TV personality of mine for many years. Can you share some of his wisdom on aging?
Admired by many for his integrity as a broadcaster, Hugh Downs likened getting old to the ebb and tide of the sea. "The older you get, you find there's a tide that kind of goes out and leaves the rocks that are important. You see what are the big rocks and what are the little rocks. When you're younger, little rocks seem to be very large and they're not important, and the big rocks you can't even see. I think the older I get, the more I see that the big rocks mean keeping promises, keeping your word. And that's something to cling to, because there are some things in which I really feel like I would keep my word or keep a promise, even if it cost me my career or endangered my life. Your values become more important as you become older." His words are poignant. Connie Goldman
