Prostate Screenings?
Prostate Screenings?
I'm 38 years old. My 68-year-old father was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. I hate going to doctor, but do I need to make an appointment for a prostate cancer screening now? My father is 30 years older than me, and I've read that prostate cancer in men younger than 40 years old is rare.
It's good to see you on
It's good to see you on here, Crickett. We'll master this system yet, huh?
My father also got his prostate problem later in life and lived to a still older age. Yes, it is relatively uncommon for that much younger men to have this problem, however, it's good to find it out early as that's when they can do so much good for you. Crickett and Jon have a lot more to look forward towards now that they have more info on his status with it.
Good luck.

Hi LoisAnn, as you know(I"m
Hi LoisAnn, as you know(I"m really sure I told you this), but when the Pathology report came back, Jon's Gleason score was 3+4=7, which means that the primary cancer was a 3(not as agressive & a small amount of 4). That's why all Gleason scores are not "created equal" even if they equal the same total. In other words if someone has a 4+3=7, that means they have more of the agressive cancer, where in Jon's being a 3+4=7 was better. Yet they did take out that *microscopic* piece of cancer that was just on the very outside of his prostate. The pathologist didn't find any more just that one microscopic piece. He felt not only was Jon's gleason score was good(he doesn't see anyone with less than a score of 6 & anywhere from 6-10), but that the miscroscopic piece poses a very low risk because it was not near any body parts or nerves. He spoke very positive about his outlook/outcome. Here's the thing though. I read an article on this site where a doctor who had prostate cancer made this comment, "You are never cured, you just bide your time". Just *BIDE YOUR TIME*. How encouraging/uplifting is that.....NOT!!!!!!!!!!!! I stopped reading stuff in the beginning of Jon's diagnosis because there were so many opinions & I think some people(no matter what their profession) are alarmists by nature whether it warrants it or not. Then I read that article & I got sucker punched again. It doesn't help that his PSA test is only a little more than a week away. We do what we can. Bottom line is this. The cancer whether it never comes back & Jon dies of old age of something else or whether it comes back sooner is out of our hands. We don't have control over these things. Crickett
Family History? Early Prostate Screening-YES
My husband's father had prostate cancer at the age of 68. My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 53 last October. Nothing was felt during the DRE exam, but his PSA was 6.2. A biopsy confirmed prostate cancer in which his prostate was robotically removed in October of 2007. His first PSA since the surgery was in February & was a 0. His next one is on 8-13 & we are praying & hoping for another 0. Go in early. Yes, 38 is very rare, but many men younger than 38 get screened yearly.
