Budget Conscious Beauty at Home

By Georgea Kovanis

Let's make this clear:

There are few things better than a trip to the salon -- especially when it comes to hair color.

But, with the economy the way it is, it's not always possible to head to the salon for hair, nails and other beauty treatments.

So we've gathered some tips from beauty experts on how to get the most from your beauty treatments and how to do a few of those at home.

Hair Color

Expert: Umberto Savone, California-based hairstylist to stars (including Christina Applegate). His Umberto Beverly Hills products are available exclusively at Target and www.target.com.

  • Read hair color instructions carefully.
  • Rub Vaseline along your hairline to keep color from getting on your skin.
  • Do not try to change your color more than 2 or 3 shades from its natural color. You need a professional with access to professional grade hair color to do this.
  • Apply color to regrowth only, not on the ends.
  • To protect the color, wait 48 hours after coloring to wash your hair.
  • Don't wash your hair every day. Think about using a dry shampoo between regular shampoos.
  • Avoid hair products with alcohol because they can dry out your hair and cause the color to fade.
  • Always rinse and condition hair after swimming.
