Dear Dr. Susan:
Since I’ve taken on a leadership role at a top business in my community, work is my priority. My children are grown and my husband travels often with his job, so working fulfills me. However, the long hours at the office make it hard for me to eat healthfully. I feel older than my age and know I don’t look as good as I could. What foods, in particular, should I steer away from?
It’s great that you’ve found a position and a company that makes you feel fulfilled and gives you a sense of worth. But your unhealthy eating at the office, thanks to long hours and delivery services, ages you more quickly and wreaks havoc on your skin. Your issue isn’t uncommon; I see so many office workers doing overtime and calling out for fast food. So, you’re asking what foods you should steer away from and that’s a great start. Here are three age accelerators that should be nixed from your diet immediately:
1. Full fat dairy. Switch to low fat or fat free. They maintain the vitamins and minerals that are good for your body, but they take out the saturated fat, which is what ages you more quickly.
2. Fried foods. The latest buzz in nutrition has been trans fats, and fried foods are loaded with them. Just like saturated fats, trans fats age you in the same ways.
3. Refined carbs. This is a biggie, but it’s also a hard one. This includes soda, most processed foods, and white flour. And I’m talking refined carbs, which mainly consists of corn syrup or sugar, white flour, and no fiber. Refined carbs are age accelerators and are linked to macular degeneration and metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of symptoms, including high blood fats, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and belly fat.
