"As a well-known skin rejuvenator," she says, "it helps to reduce inflammation and can even help treat sunburn." A toner is important, she advises, because it "works to remove any dirt, close pores, and strengthen the skin against outside infection."
Aloe vera is just one of several toners based on biological ingredients. Another is camomile, a well-known herb whose leaves "produce an oily substance used to calm sensitive skin."
Also useful, Silverton says, is witch hazel -- to cool inflammation, reduce redness, and control surface oil -- and the oil from the juniper berry, which is "particularly antiseptic and soothing." She says that "if you are prone to oily or spotty skin, add plant-based formulas to your daily routine, and watch blemishes fade away."
