De-Aging Makeup for Healthier Skin

  • By Lois Joy Johnson

Makeup is now seriously in the de-aging business and beauty brands have solved all our foundation gripes with new technologies and ingredients. So now we have face makeup that not only replenishes aging skin with moisture but claims to firm, tighten, smooth, nourish, and protect us from sun damage too. Practically every foundation is packed with vitamins, antioxidants, peptides, minerals and has an SPF smacked on the label. Do they work? Sales statistics seem to say we believe they do. According to a report on --the site for Cosmetic Executive Women -- the beauty industry's major non-profit organization- sales of makeup saw the higher gains this June for example than skin care or fragrance (a 7 percent increase to $316 million for that month alone to be precise!).

Not sure? Here are five tips to consider before buying:

  • Look for Texture and Color First, Treatment Second Be honest, the reason you're wearing face makeup is to correct pigmentation issues. The level of coverage, the right color and texture are the priority. Find two or three brands in your price range that offer at least 12 shade options for an authentic skin tone match and then check out the "extras." The best new foundations are light, glide on, are buildable and use dense pigments in a sheer formula for a skin-like look while providing coverage. Miracle? No just good science. So forget about powder foundation, cream-to-powder foundation, heavy cream makeup in jars and greasy liquids. They make us look old no matter de-aging ingredients lie within.

  • Makeup Is Not a Replacement for Skincare Consider cosmetics as complementary products that enhance the tough work of your de-aging skin care regimen. You need both. The right makeup does provide an immediate boost to your skin, but to look even fresher and healthier, don't skip the moisturizers, serums, eye creams, night creams, and day creams.! For many women, these products now rank above eye makeup and lipstick in terms of a fast fix.

Try: L' Oreal Revitalift Triple Power Deep Acting Moisturizer ($12.99, item # 2249191

  • Hyaluronic Acid, Retinol, and Peptides in Makeup Work Attracting and locking in water and moisture and restoring collagen plumps up lines and wrinkles. Makeup claiming firming or wrinkle reducing abilities relies on the ingredients hyaluronic acid and glycerin, retinol and peptides to do exactly that. Look for one or more of these ingredients in the ad, on the package or ingredient list. Retinol is sometimes listed as retinyl palmitate or vitamin A. Hyaluronic acid is sometimes listed as sodium hyaluronate.

  • Makeup with a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen Protects An SPF in makeup does keep UVA/ UVB rays from doing further damage during ordinary workdays or when you're dashing around. You do need to reapply any makeup with a broad spectrum sunscreen at least every two hours if you're actually spending the day outdoors - window shopping, hitting garage sales, having lunch at an outdoor cafe for example. Skip the makeup and use a true water-resistant sunscreen for a day at the beach or pool or for outdoor sports.

Try: Neutrogena Healthy Skin Compact Makeup SPF 55 ($12.99,

  • Makeup with Antioxidants and Light Reflectors Evens Out Tone Makeup that includes antioxidants such as vitamins C and E or green tea, minerals and botanical plus optical diffusers can minimize the appearance of redness and brown spots and provide a glow to compensate for the slowdown in cell renewal and dryness.
