A Fishy Solution To Wrinkles

Fish Oil And Facial Wrinkles

Let’s face it. Our skin is sensitive.  It’s affected by what we eat as well as the cold, sun, and pollutants in our environment. Well, is fish oil the answer to help us smooth our wrinkles, improve dry skin and even calm inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis? Maybe.

The secret is in fish oil’s ability to bring moisture to the skin. Although it won’t get rid of wrinkles permanently or prevent them from happening, it can change their appearance. That’s because dry skin enhances the appearance of wrinkles and makes them look more noticeable. Fish oil pumps up skin temporarily. Sadly, it’s not a permanent solution.

The real reason we develop wrinkles as we get older is that our bodies produce less collagen and elastin. Without sufficient amounts of collagen and elastin, the skin loses strength and elasticity and begins to sag, creating wrinkles. Fish oil may help to improve the dry skin aspect, but it does not enhance the production of collagen and elastin.

But don’t be disheartened. You’ll notice that if you’re consuming fish oil (either through foods or supplements), your skin may look more youthful not only because it’s less dry but it can develop a lovely glow by improving the overall health of your body.

The key here is to stay real. Fish oil capsules will not  make wrinkles magically vanish. But, potentially, by incorporating omega-3′s into a healthy and balanced lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, exercise, proper rest, and limited stress, you may see a new radiance to your skin. What about helping psoriasis? Studies have shown that consuming a fatty acid found in fish called EPA (eicosapentanoic acid) may provide symptom relief, and EPA is an "omega-3 fatty acid." The best kind of fish to consume are the oily ones -- trout, mackerel, salmon -- but and you needn’t have them for dinner every night.  Non-oily fish -- cod, flounder, haddock -- are also worth having, but you'll need to eat a bit more of them. Tuna packed in omega-6 vegetable oil doesn’t count. Before changing your diet dramatically or taking supplements, be sure to run it by your health care provider. Robin Westen is ThirdAge’s medical reporter. Check for her daily updates.
