Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is best for people who are tense all the time, even when youre drowsy. To get the most benefit, put some balm or oil on the back of your neck and shoulders, and take deep breaths when lying down. Any fragrance you like will help you calm down, as long as it's soothing. -
Valerian Tea
If you tend to be drowsy even after a full night's sleep, Valerian tea could help you feel more refreshed by helping you sleep deeper. You'll need to drink the tea for several nights before it will work. But beware; having Valerian tea for an extended period of time (more than two weeks) can lead to dependency. Its also been known to interfere with some prescription medication, particularly cholesterol medication.
Be sure to check with your doctor before beginning a regimen.

GABA- Enhanced Drinks
For the ultra-stressed, taking a shot of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) could help. Best taken right before bed, GABA has been proven to calm your brain functioning so you can fall asleep. You can also increase your GABA intake by eating brown rice, bananas, and mackerel throughout the day. -
Melatonin Supplements
For people who are unable to go to sleep until way past bedtime, perhaps a dose of melatonin will help. Melatonin is a neurohormone that is produced by the brain naturally. It tells your body that it is time for sleep. But some peoples melatonin levels are diminished because of being overexposed to light during the evening. Taking a three-milligram tablet about 15-20 minutes before bedtime should help the situation. Be sure to speak with your doctor before beginning to take it. Melatonin is not recommended for women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. -
Over-the-Counter- Sleeping Pills
An over-the-counter pill might help if youre just going through a stressful time but normally have no trouble sleeping. Its best to take pills sparingly, as your body can build up a tolerance. Studies have also shown that as you get older, it will take longer for your body to digest these types of pills. Finally, to avoid dangerous side effects, be sure to avoid taking sleeping pills if you will be drinking alcohol. -
Prescription Medication
If you have consistent problems falling asleep, prescription pills could be for you. There are a variety of medications out there designed to help you fall asleep, talk to your doctor to devise a strategy specific to your needs.
