When Osama bin Laden was killed on May 2nd 2011, a nine-year hunt for the man who claimed responsibility for the loss of 2,973 lives on 9/11 finally ended. Rumors and speculations swirled about the details of the historic shooting but only now some are the facts coming to light. Here are eight recent disclosures from a piece in this week's issue of The New Yorker:
- The words the SEAL who killed Osama bin Laden radioed home were: "For God and country - Geronimo, Geronimo, Geronimo."
- The SEALs always intended to shoot Bin Laden rather than capture him.
- Key Advisers, including Robert Gates, objected to the plan.
- The mission nearly failed during the first minute after the helicopter went down.
- President Obama has not asked who pulled the trigger and no one will ever know.
- Medics took samples of bone marrow from Bin Laden's body.
- The SEALs were not wearing helmet cameras as had been previously reported.
- Bin Laden's body was offered to the Saudis for burial but they refused it.
