French Citizens Think Dominique Strauss-Kahn Was Set Up
Can you believe it? It seems an estimated 60 per cent of the French think that IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was set up and that the charges that he sexually assaulted a maid are part of some vast conspiracy to bring down his candidacy for President. In one conspiracy theory many believe the United States and French President Nicolas Sarkozy arranged it all.
The French have also been enraged by the photos of a handcuffed DSK doing a “perp” walk before the cameras. In response, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, "I think it is humiliating, but if you don't want to do the perp walk, don't do the crime." Also it has been reported that Sarkozy was so concerned about Strauss-Kahn’s reputation he warned him to behave himself in the U.S. “Avoid taking the lift (elevator) with interns. France cannot permit a scandal,” he advised.
“In some quarters, the question of what is wrong with Strauss-Kahn has almost been replaced by what is wrong with the United States," said Dominique Moisi, of the French International Relations Institute. Well, we think what is very right about the United States is that a poor and powerless woman who has been assaulted and violated by a man can be heard. And that the man, though he is rich and powerful, may have to pay for the consequences of his criminal actions.
