Michelle Obama, who’s made good nutrition and exercise her priorities, has written a book about the famous White House kitchen garden – and says it’s an “expression of my hopes” that the nation’s children will get healthier.
Obama, who’s publicized her “Let’s Move” campaign through appearances on the “Tonight” show and “Ellen,” began the garden in 2009 on the South Lawn of the White House. Soon the garden was overflowing with vegetables, including peppers and eggplants, that the First Lady used for meals in the White House.
The First Lady admits, though, that she’s not the one doing most of the garden work. That’s reserved for White House employees and staff volunteers.
The book, “American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens across America,” also includes recipes for each season. Published by Crown, it costs $30. Obama got no advance, and proceeds from the book will go to the National Parks Foundation to finance programs in healthy eating.
