Three cheers for Feris Jones, 50, who did what she was trained to do when a thug tried to rob a Fort Greene, New York beauty salon on Saturday night when she was having her hair done. Feris, who is known as Jonesy to pals, is a New York police woman who is always packing. She was off-duty but that didnt stop her from springing into action.
When the alleged perp, 19-year-old Winston Cox, armed with a .44 Magnum ordered the beauty shops customers into the back room and demanded their wallets, Jonesy sprung into action. She drew her .38 caliber Smith and Wesson , told the other women to get down, and confronted the robber. Although she had never fired her gun in a police action during her twenty years on the force, she shot the gun out of the hold-up mans hand with her first shot, wounding him. Second shot: she took out the door knob of the salon, making it difficult for him to escape. He did get out through a window but was arrested soon after.
Just yesterday she was promoted to detective and presented with a detectives gold badge by Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. We applaud her bravery, her coolness and her upswept hair-do which she joked took her to Monday night to have the hairdresser finally finish. It looked great.
