Take a Chance

When times are tough we all pull back and try to keep the status quo. But sometimes in the toughest of times resides the greatest opportunity.  Taking a chance against the odds often produces great gains.

"Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast; in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish." Ovid

But what if you are exhausted, your energy is spent, and money is tight? How do you take a chance when you are barely hanging on?  Chance doesn’t need to be a great risk to reap rewards. In my yoga class today we worked on flexibility. Not simply creating a flexible body but reaching out and trying something new or changing rigid and fixed habits in favor of exploration. We all get confined into our own rigid and fixed ideas. One of the beauties of yoga is it challenges you to move out of your comfort zone and move your body-mind in new and open ways.

Here are a few examples of things you can do to move out of conformity and into the world of chance:

  1. Talk to someone new today. Anywhere you go start a conversation. You may be surprised at what you learn. Take a chance.
  2. Try a new recipe or a new style of cooking. You may be surprised at how much fun you have and how much satisfaction you get. Take a chance.
  3. Go through your wardrobe and create a few new and interesting outfits. Clean your closet, arrange your clothes and you might just find a new and exciting you with a whole new look. Take a chance.
  4. Tell someone you love how much you appreciate them. They might just give you appreciation in return. Take a chance.
  5. Take a different path. Change your routine. Visit a different market or store. Do something today that you would not ordinarily do Monday through Friday. See a movie. Go to lunch. Invite a friend to lunch. Take a different exercise class. Gain a different perspective. Take a chance.

If you have any suggestion for taking a chance write back to me. I’d love to here from all you fisherpersons casting your hooks into the pool of chance. It’s a powerful antidote to complacency.
