Fear Not

Stripped of all their masquerades, the fears of all men are quite identical: the fear of loneliness, rejection, inferiority, unmanageable anger, illness, and death. – Joshua Loth Lieberman

I woke up today with a sense of fear. I must go to the doctor today for the pathology reports from my cancer operation. I feel a sense of nervousness about not knowing and at the same time wish I could just brush this all away and go on with my life.  Fear is a might force that can destroy the very foundation of your soul.
In yoga there are three basic fears; fear of being rejected, fear of not being loved, and fear of death. The universe has infinitely accepted us, infinitely loves us, and because we are infinity onto ourselves we have nothing to fear accept fear itself. In theory this works but in practice when faced with loneliness, rejection, inferiority, anger, illness, and death it is quite another thing to manage the fear.
To practice yoga, I will sit quietly and allow the free flow of cosmic energy to quiet my soul. I will breathe deep and allow the body-mind to find a state of balance. I realize that the very energy of fear will create a force that has the potential to make my outcome even worse. I must let go of the outcome and allow the universe to provide me with a safe haven within the security of my soul.
I reflect back now to all the times I have let fear rule my life. It always destroyed my day and always left me feeling worn out.  My mind would create imaginary scenarios that fed the fear until the fear would become so out of touch with reality that I would find it difficult to surrender and find peace of mind, strength of body, and connection to my soul. Fear is powerful and destructive.
I sit quietly and I can feel the fear pushing its way from my mind into the veins of my body. I feel it in my gut, my back, and in the tension of my muscles. I breathe deep and begin to let it go. As the fear releases my body relaxes and my mind becomes quiet and still. I realize that the very nature of fear is to destroy the moment and when the moment is destroyed the wonders of life disappear and all that is left is tension and pain.
Joy is everywhere. If we reach out to find it joy is present in every situation and every experience of life. Love is ever present. It is here now in this very moment. Wisdom reveals to us that life has given us this joy and this love. It is within our awareness that we decide to make life joyous or full of fear.  With this wisdom we can choose to soar above our fears by letting go of pain, and of ignorance which serves no purpose but to destroy our physical, mental, sexual, economical, and spiritual life. Letting go of the fear makes us a little wiser, a little calmer, and a little happier than we were just a few moments ago. This is what it means to find peace within no matter what happens without. There is noting to fear but fear itself.
