This too will pass.

Teaching yoga (especially therapy yoga) exposes me to many of the joys and sadness of other people’s lives. Yoga is a place where not only do we practice the asanas but it also is a vehicle for sharing emotions and feelings. Many of my students share with me the intricacies of their lives.
One such woman was named Farrar. She came to my class at a time of crisis in her life. After twenty-five years her husband left her. She had three children all in their late teens and early twenties. She was going through menopause and her life seemed to be falling apart. She cried as I hugged her one day after class.
She continued to come to class although her work did not allow her to come every week. From time to time Farrar would appear, smile, and share with me little parts of her life. She wanted to lose weight so she started coming to my cycle class. For over two years I would see Farrar off and on in a causal way through the course of her taking my classes.
Yesterday she came to class early, smiling and happy. For the first time in months we chatted about her life. Her son and daughter had gotten married. Her daughter was just now pregnant with her first grandchild and she had met a wonderful man. He came to her children’s weddings to support her. “I am blessed”, she told me. She smiled as we reflected back on how far her life had come over the last few years.
The point is that nothing in life is permanent. Life is a constant change and that constant change is really unpredictable and uncertain. So acceptance of the present moment is all that we have and it is this acceptance that brings us peace of mind. In yoga we are taught that we should never be overly elated about the good that comes into our lives nor should we be overly depressed by the sadness. All things in life change and if you become overly attached to any one emotion, thought, feeling, or thing you will surely be disappointed.
Stop right now and embrace the moment! Whatever is in your life at this very moment is exactly what needs to be in your life; NOW. Accept it but do not get overly attached because it will pass and make room for a new experience. Life is about evolution or the constant change of things. Nothing is permanent and everything is transitory, so enjoy this moment because, it too will pass.
