Money for Nothing

Here are a couple of random thoughts, while waiting for the market to open. Should the L.A. Dodgers play the Red Soxs in the World Series, the Soxs will be paying for Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez to beat them. (Part of the trade that sent Manny from the Red Soxs to the Dodgers during the season required the Soxs to continue to pay all of Manny's salary for the year.) It gets better. If the Dodgers win, not only will Manny get a World Series ring, he will get two bonus checks. The first, for being a member of the winning team. And, the Sox will pay him a pro-rated share of what the losing team receives to cover the time he played for them during the season. Sure beats trying to make money in the market.. More…

Are You a NIMGP?

Every now and then in the news, we hear of a group of people who don't want something built near their neighborhood. The people who resist changes to their turf are called NIMBYs, an acronym for Not In My Back Yard. There is a similar group of people who quietly are amplifying the emerging skills shortage in our country. They are the NIMGPs.  Are you one of them? More…

Podcast Focused on Focus

I've heard many people refer to the birthing of books. I never really liked the sound of that metaphor, but I must admit that it works. The publication date is the birthing and then the care and feeding of our hard work begins. I think we all have a good book (or two or three) inside waiting to be born. My mother recently passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. She finished her book, called Place Settings in Time, just before she died. The book is about the changing role of women as seen through the changes in how we set our dinner table. My siblings and I have decided to publish the book in honor of mom and donate all proceeds to Habitat for Humanity (that was mother's plan, too). My father, who is in the mid stages of alzheimer's and also suffers from heart disease, has been writing stories of his memories for years. They have been very helpful to him recently, as he regularly rereads them to remind himself of life's little details. My siblings and I have already decided to pull all his stories together into a book, too. This one will be just for the family. I am surrounded by books waiting to be born. More…

More About Job Search After 50

Last week's post about Baby Boomer job search got lots of attention, so I thought I would stay on that theme. Here are a few posts by blogger David St. Lawrence about facing layoffs after 50. If you are 50 and facing layoffs... (Part 1)  Facing Layoffs at 50 (Part 2)  David also offers a couple good posts on networking, which is important for job seekers: More…

Baby Boomers Have Trouble Getting New Jobs?

This post from UK's Management Issues caught my eye. Here's the first sentence: Nearly six out of 10 baby boomer Britons want to work beyond the normal state pension age but two-thirds find it impossible to get a job within 10 years of retirement as firms still seek to put employees aged over 50 out to pasture. Hmmm... Interesting stuff. Not entirely surprising because people 45 and over who get laid off often have a tough time getting another job. What's your experience? As technology becomes a more important part of every aspect of business, is this just going to get worse? More…

Our Search for Meaning

I really like this post on the Inside Conversation blog called, The Existential Vacuum. Lee points out that many people have not found meaning in the work they do and notices about how this impacts individuals and organizations. The times are changing and more people are demanding a fulfilling career. Book shelves are filled with advice for how to find greater meaning. Seminars and conferences have been popping up too. And as the Baby Boomers mature, they are thinking more about how to fill their days with projects that light them up. But how does one go from unfulfilled to fulfilled? What's the process that will enable people to determine what they want and and to achieve their goals? More…
