How many of the 4500 passengers on Carnivals cruise ship Splendor are going to want to book a cruise again? The anticipation and settling into a cabin, the departure from shore and exploring the ship must have been so exciting. The engine fire that cut off power to the boat was exciting, too; but that is not what the passengers paid for days of backed up toilets, no air flow, pitch black cabins, no hot food or cold shrimp.
Ive been lucky to have very few problems when I have traveled. My only cruise was truthfully labeled A Cruise to Nowhere. Its purpose was to introduce journalists and those in the travel trade to Royal Caribbeans Brilliance of the Seas on a test drive. We left Englands coast and went only a short way out for 2 nights so that we could report on the glamorous design and smooth movement. The worst that happened was my older sister and I fought over my being the messy one, leaving my clothes on the floor and spilling over onto her side of the room, which has happened since the beginning of time.
Several years later, George Smith disappeared from Brilliance of the Seas while on his honeymoon. Was it murder, suicide, or an accident? We dont know. But is it really appropriate for the ship to conduct Murder Mystery Nights as part of their entertainment? I, for one, would not like to be stuck on that ship if it lost power.
