Welcome to Travel and Vacations
Welcome to Travel and Vacations
Hi,
I am so happy to meet you! I'm Cheryl, manager of the Travel and Vacations group here at ThirdAge. My job is to get things rolling, then stand aside so the members can have fun, make friends, and share their experiences. This really is your group!
We can talk about anything that's on your mind. Are gas prices putting a crimp in your travel plans? Are you a Disney park addict? (You know who you are!) Do you work 50 weeks a year just so you can spend two glorious weeks exploring Europe each summer?
Whether you are a newbie to travel or a seasoned sojourner, you are welcome to post a question, answer a call for help, or just troll for ideas. (Oops! Don't like that word "troll." If you're one, please try the Games Games Games group).
Best to you,
Cheryl
Introduction
I am new to ThirdAge. I am a 62 year old US citizan who is living in Kenya. I am interested in e-mailing with other Americans about senior issues.....and if you have questions about Kenya or serving in the Peace Corps, I'll see if I can help.
Alaskan Cruise..........
I have the travel bug, too. But being single and with very few single friends, I have no one to go with me. Does anyone know of a group that sets up travels for people that love to go and see all there is??
If you check the cruise
If you check the cruise lines they generally have a 55+ or Senior program or discount. My wife and I, both over 55, are going to Alaska this August on the Sea Princess out of San Francisco. I joined Cruise Critic (free) and started a cruise call in the Princess section for our cruise. Other members who are taking the same sailing have chimed in (that's the idea) and it looks like a large percentage of our group are seniors. I don't think there are special senior cruises, though I may be wrong, as you always have choices in cabins and excursions.
To answer your real question, Cruise Critic (CC) has a section for single cruisers that may help. Heck theres still time and space to join us on Aug 22. I'll even give you my travel agents (TA) phone number here in the SF Bay area.
nice to hear from you
we will keep in touch
Travel Lover
Hi, I am too an avid traveler. I traveled to Kenya, Africa last year. What a dream come true. Has anyone been on an Alaskan cruise. That is our next dream trip. We are going to Washington DC in April to visit friends. Any awesome places to go in Wash DC. We are trying to get a tour of the White House and Pentagon, hoping to go to Williamsburg and Gettysburg.

Wanting to travel everywhere and wondering how is it possible pluse i am only entilted to three (3) week vacation a year. Not enough time!
Yes Kenya was a great
Yes Kenya was a great adventure. I am hoping to go again sometime in the future. I am really excited about traveling anywhere. I went to Savannah, GA for my 60th birthday, a present to myself. It is a great old city. Beautiful buildings and so many stories about the city. Has anyone else been to Savannah?
I am glad that 2 of you have
I am glad that 2 of you have been to Kenya. That's where I live. I came here with Peace Corps (one of the older volunteers they are now trying to recruit) and have decided to stay for awhile. I live in a small fishing village on the coast just north of Mombasa. Let me know if you ever get back in this part of the world.
Been there twice....always
Been there twice....always stay at a darling Bread & Breakfast on President Street. Once in their hottest ever summer, 103o and once in the coldest ever !!!! Took the dinner/river cruise which was delightful. On cobblestone walkway, stepped in a space with a stone missing; fell and broke ankle.......that was dreadful....had to shorten trip. Overall, a great place to tour, walk the parks and enjoy Riverwalk.
I have been there. It is
I have been there. It is one of my favorites. St. Augustine and Charleston are right up there too. have you been to Italy? Another favorite of mine. Jeanne

Hi, I'm new to ThirdAge and to this group. I own/run/do everything Yellow Bear Journeys - an ecotour company. We go to Hawaii and Pacific NW. Somebody asked about the Caribbean. I would avoid it during hurricane season.
I've been to Spain, Saudi Arabia, Columbia. It's been ages, so I'm sure things have changed, but I'd be happy to share what I can.

Crusing Advice?
Hi there! For my wife's and my 40th wedding anniversary next year, we want to go on a cruise. But between the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and everywhere else, we don't know where to start. Can anyone lend some friendly advice? Or tell me a bit about a personal experience you've had that might help us get pointed in a direction? We'd like to start planning sooner rather than later. Thanks . . .
Be sure a cruise is right
Be sure a cruise is right for you! I am VERY active including ocean sailing. Once took a 3-day cruise thru straights of Magellan to avoid yet another flight and thought I'd lose my mind! The short hiking trips were just not enough for me. Think about what you and your partner like to do before settling on a cruise. My personal anniversary favorite is ALWAYS Paris!!
We took my dream vacation
We took my dream vacation last Sept. It was a cruise from Venice to Monaco. It was great, but I was disappointed in one aspect. We did our cruising at night and would then tour at the different ports. If I did it all over I would be sue to be able do some of the at sea during the day inorder to see the coasts.

I would suggest cruising in
I would suggest cruising in the southern Caribbean. The weather is generally always perfect! Check out school vacation dates, and don't plan your cruise during those weeks or you'll be inundated with kids. I'd go with a mid-priced line (we love Royal Caribbean) and spend the extra money for a room with a balcony. Find a room towards the middle of the ship and a higher floor for the smoothest sail. Have fun!
Hello to you! Cruising for
Hello to you! Cruising for me is a plus no matter what the itinerary takes me. You had not mentioned if you have cruised before or where you live, because some of the ports are closer that other, as you know with flight and time management.
I suggest you look over the cruise brochures and depending on your interests, heatlh and weather, enjoy enjoy enjoy!
Egypt
My college-age son is traveling to Egypt this summer, and I've heard tourists are treated very well there. Still, it makes me nervous that he is going to be there. (He has a friend he met at an international camp who has been asking him to come visit, so he will be with an Egyptian family for part of his stay).
Has anyone had any experience traveling in Egypt?
