General Discussion: Diet Support Group

Instead of laying out large sums of money to lose weight, who would not rather have a member support group? We could share ideas, encourage one another, and have weekly weigh-ins. There are probably many like myself who yo-yo diet (not good) but haven't found a solution yet. When we get serious about dieting, there is no one to turn to except some national program which costs money. I can't afford that. I'm a 68-year-old male who would like to lose 20 pounds. But is it ever so hard!! I walk daily but can't get past those 1/2 gallon ice cream sales.

natural supplements? anybody?

I´m looking for a long time for an all natural supplement. Three products are already in my focus: Levocaptine, ChitoGenics and Vitabase - does anybody have any experiences with those three or maybe knows a even better one? please don´t suggest any chemical based stuff, ´cause I´m probably allergic to it. :(

I wouldn´t try the Vitabase

I wouldn´t try the Vitabase stuff, havn´t had any success wit it. Most of the time I was hungry and didn´t feel very fit. :(

From what I could manage to find out about the other two slimming pills, I would say that Levocaptine seems to be the better one. The ingredients are allright and they obviously have a telephone service for training tips and general support. that´s a nice and helpful idea in my eyes. can´t say much about the chito stuff, but maybe you´ll find out more by asking directly in this forum. ;)

please tell us about the product you choose and how successful you are!

Reducing Your Weight

I read your posts and I'd

I read your posts and I'd like to suggest something that helped me - (perhaps even saved my life)
I needed to lose 40+lbs and a friend suggested I attend attend OA. See the following for a local location: http://www.oa.org/index.htm

I confess I hated it the first three times I went and in fact became very rebellious (whatever someone said they were giving up I went home and ate, No one would tell me...blah blah blah, rebellion!). meanwhile the numbers on the scale slowly ticked upward year after year.

I dropped out for a couple months only to find everything I was trying (and failing) was not working and the message and sense of HOPE that I heard at HOW-OA called to me in some strange way.
Perhaps it can also hep you.
It is not another diet club, it is a program that deals with the eating but also the mental and emotional stuff as well.

Good Luck.
KT

PS
There is a great meeting in San Mateo on Saturday's at 10am.
I lost the 40 lbs beginning on March 25-and finished by about mid September.
I have maintained my weight release through the holidays

This worked for me..

After my daughter had her first child, she gained 40 pounds. Now being that I was overweight too, we decided to try and lose weight together. She turned me on to this great corrective belt by Lytess at fitandsharp.com, and boy did it do wonders. In just one month my clothes were fitting me looser and I was really motivated to keep losing weight. The best part is that it fits comfortably under my clothes and it tones my midsection while I'm at work. Check it out, it really works.

It is hard to lose weight

Hi, I am new here, I am a 56 year old female, I would love to lose 40lbs, but I just love to eat. I also just love to cook and bake (esp cake) Now since my husband left (he is a drunk) I cook all these nice things and eat them myself. This is going to be a problem, because I keep gaining weight. I need some advise on how to lose my extra baggage.

ATkins Diet Experience?

Just started on the Atkins Diet recently and am looking for online buddies who have experience with it. I am 58, have 50 pounds to lose, and could use support as I am disabled and cannot get out to things like OA or other groups.

Good luck to all dieters out there...alone we have trouble, together we can.

Dharma

I also used the Atkins diet,

I also used the Atkins diet, for all intents and purposes, I cut out all simple carbohydrates. Started July 2007, lost 74 lbs by March 2008. A positive benefit of cutting out white flour products and sugar is, adter a day or two ones appetite is virtually gone! I would just be sure you have no kidney problems before using this diet. Good luck!

Eat only when hungry ?

I have started a weight loss program called weight down. We eat what we want, only when we are truly hungry and stop when we are full. In all the weight loss programs I have been told, "Never let your self get too hungry. You will over eat if you do." Well I'm here to tell you. I've lost 20 lbs. I feel better than I have in years. I've even felt like walking and exercising not because I have to, but because I want to. I would like to join a chat. I need all the help I can get.

Protein Power Diet

I notice it's mostly women on this board (just a comment). My wife and I are in our mid-60s and have just started the Protein Power Diet, in which you adjust your diet to about 75% protein and 25% carbohydrates. We got turned on to it by our daughter who is having good success with it. So far the things I've noticed most are (1) that you sure don't starve on this one, (2)the tab is higher at the supermarket checkout, and (3) there are carbohydrates in a lot of places you wouldn't expect them to be. The only complaint I have so far is it's a pain in the b... counting doing all the arithmetic on carb grams. We'll see how it goes, though. It's supposed to be a good diet for those with high blood pressure and/or diabetes, neither of which is an issue with us, thank God.

The book is called "Protein Power" by Michael and Mary Eades, both of whom are MDs. I have no economic interest in selling books here. Just passing along information.

Help

I am a grandmother, 58 on May 7th and I weigh 217 pounds. I've gained 45 pounds in the past year. I've always been heavy. In Feb. of 1997 I decided to lose weight with my husband who WAS diabetic. We went on very low fat diets and each of us lost about 70 pounds. I felt great. I don't know what happenned but we started to slip and I've gone from 170# up to my present weight. I really need some incentive to lose again other than for health purposes. I'm desperate!!! I'm hungry all the time and if it doesn't move I eat it. Any suggestions, They'll all be appreciated. By the way after my husband lost weight he was able to get off insulin completely. He has gained back about 75% of his weight too but thank goodness his blood sugar is still normal

Diet Support Group,

Diet Support Group, especially being a ThirdAger, could sound better to me. I've been fighting weight since childhood, wnet to being almost anorexic, and the rest. When the tone of your day is based on the number on the scale (and it really was!!!), you know there's a problem within. I've been less disturbed as I've gotten older, but I've gained 30 pounds and have been having a hard time getting them off. Please keep me informed.

By JusJane
JusJane's picture

Hey Suzy

I can appreciate your problem. I too am overweight but not like you I've ALWAYS been very heavy. I tried going on low fat diets and was able to shed pounds quite quickly. No fried foods, I use sprays. I have been guilty over the past year and eating just about everything and guess what. The weight is back on. So I'm trying to get the incentive to really WATCH it again. I was always full I guess because I wasn't eating empty calories. Food that didn't fill just accumulated the calories.

Realistic Goal??

Hi all!

I am a 58 yr old woman, 60 lbs. overweight, who has been living a sendentary, nutritionally disastrous, lifestyle for the past five years. In about 10 months I expect to be spending an extended period of time in a warm country where a lot of walking is necessary.
I have just started, a low fat regime, eating three meals a day, rather than my usual one meal, and will be using a treadmill regularly.
Is it reasonable to hope to lose this weight and get in shape for a lot of walking in 10 months?

Any help, suggestions, appreciated.

I've had a bout with some

I've had a bout with some sort of stomach illness. Instead of LOSING some weight with it, I think I've gained, but I don't know this for a fact because I haven't weighed myself. The dehydration has made me become a drinking fool (water!) and I'm hoping to have a good report next week. Yes, this is an excuse for not weighing in on Saturday, but I have a phobia about weighing in any other day!

I was having difficulty making the chat session since we eat around 7PM (EDST) and I am heading for beddy-bye before 11PM.

Wanlass:

Some of the responses might be hidden in the earlier entries. I always check by dates. But it's also summertime and people are in and out. I, for example, was away most of the week. And unlike you, I didn't feel like eating everything. I ate it. But that only gave me a greater will to get back on the diet. Every day is a new day.

Are you checking the other two forums in this Discussion Group?

Wanlass, I stop by every day, post whenever I can contribute something positive, and occasionally when I need to vent something negative. But not in THIS discussion -- I post my Progress reports to the 1st discussion (Experiencing the Diet Challenge) and look for support in the 2nd discussion (Discussing....)

This discussion forum was set up to determine how much interest there would be in a diet support group, and was expanded by the other two forums on 6/25.

So, to anyone else who might be interested in our current activity, press CTRL-HOME to get back to the top of this page, and click on the red underlined text
Diet Support Group. When you get there, click on the "bookmark" to add the group to your list of favorites.
Then you can fly direct to us without further ado!

Just not much going on

losing weight

I think a support group is a great idea. I have been trying unsuccessfully to lose weight for many years. The older I get the more concerned I am. When I look at my mother (with all her health problems, i.e. heart, cancer, and diabetes)I see myself. It makes me realize how important it is to lose weight. I like to think I have some control over my life but sometimes I feel as though my body is programmed to be a certain weight because no matter how much I exercise or diet my weight stays the same. I'm hoping by joining this support group I'll learn something new that I can benefit from. Good luck to everyone. Thanks.

I agree with you!

Welcome, Chloe2!

As I was reading your post, I found myself completely agreeing with everything you said. I too see myself with my parents health problems. My Dad has diabetes, my Mother has high blood pressure and arthritis. I have all of the above.

As I get older, I too am getting more and more concerned that I can't get this weight off. It seems I have been trying to "get skinny" for decades! I don't even want to be skinny anymore, I would be happy with pleasingly plump and whole lot healthier.

This forum has helped me. I feel like a hundred sets of eyes are watching me make choices about my eating. A neat and interesting feeling. Enjoy the support!

To lose weight

After 41 years of smoking, I quit 11 months ago, and guess what?!! Yup, I have 7 lbs. that are determined to remain on the hips - I am short and do not wear these 7lbs very well. I exercise almost daily (45 min - 60 min. on treadmill, 45 min on a stepper etc. etc.), but nighttime I want to eat, so I shall follow some of the wonderful suggestions of you all. I have found Welch's no sugar added popcicles to be delicious, but not as good as Turkey Hill Super Sundae. This looks like a good support group. Thank you windancr for your assistance.

Those extra nosmoking poundage blues

I stopped smoking about fifteen years ago. I went up one size in my clothing and felt hungry all of the time. On of the good and bad sides of not smoking is that your taste buds heal and food tastes better than ever. The support group that helped me to stop gave us a book of about fifty things to do. They were for distraction. Burshing your teeth often helps. Food is not as appealing after brushing teeth. Stretch often and take four deep breaths. You do not feel as hungry if you are relaxed. I found that carrots and celery chewing did not do it for me. Think about a savor a low fat snack, snackwell's peanut butter chocloate yogurt, a juicy piece of fruit where the flavor lingers, and the leave the kitchen get onto the computer and write articles for forums or talk to your friends on Thirdage who will distract you even more.

Saw your name and talked to you but got no response. I stayed with it for both hours. The 7, which is 11 my time, went on long after I left, which was 11:20. Weekend was tough for me too. Your popsicles, by the way, have 40 calories, not 10. I found a creamsicle, however, that has 25. Not much to it, but what the heck. It, at least, takes the edge off the craving.
