General Discussion: Diet Support Group

Instead of laying out large sums of money to lose weight, who would not rather have a member support group? We could share ideas, encourage one another, and have weekly weigh-ins. There are probably many like myself who yo-yo diet (not good) but haven't found a solution yet. When we get serious about dieting, there is no one to turn to except some national program which costs money. I can't afford that. I'm a 68-year-old male who would like to lose 20 pounds. But is it ever so hard!! I walk daily but can't get past those 1/2 gallon ice cream sales.

Are you maligning my pops?

Just pulled the box out of the freezer: Life Savers sugar-free ice pops - 10 calories per pop, 12 pops per package. Right off the melting package!

I think they might have a "regular" product, containing sugar, as well. The sugar-free pops are sweetened with Nutrasweet. There are a couple of other brands out there with 15 calories, but the flavors are not as nice. And one sweetened with 10% fruit juice -- 40 calories.

And to chill the craving is my desire!

Was interruped while hanging around the chatroom to answer a one-on-one chat call from a buddy. Maybe that's when you were trying to get my attention!
I'll definitely plan to poking my nose in next week! either 7pm EDST or 10pm EDST.

Malign, malign!

That must be it. The store where I found them didn't have the Nutrasweet version. I'll have to get after them.

We missed you!

Was hoping to see you there, Newc. It started at 7pm Eastern and lasted an hour for the first chat. I didn't make it to the second one, but I think the timings about the same, starts at 10 EST and last about an hour, give or take a little. We were a little late starting the first one, I think about 10 minutes, but after it got opened up we chatted away at a good clip.

I made the SHROOMS tonight but haven't tried them. Saving for a weak moment!

Loved the Chat!

I was only able to make it to the early chat, but I really enjoyed talking to everyone there and exchanging ideas and just generally keeping each others diet spirits UP!

You did a great job, Nats! So glad you started this group.

Thanks

Your input was invaluable. I felt sorry for Gentlegeorge. You tried desperately to reach him. But that's the other aspect of dieting: self-image and this gets into psychology and psychiatry, neither of which I'm expert in. Keep that enthusiasm going!

Another idea..TA seems to be

Another idea..TA seems to be able to get learned and knowledgeable people..maybe once in a while they could get a psychologist to speak to those "fatties" of us who realize its not food that is really keeping me this way...It is all my mental attitude. How do we start to see ourselves as people who its really OK to be thinner? I have been heavy for 10 years now and it is almost a comfortable place to be..who I am..I would like to change but in a way it means giving up my persona.

the "fat" persona

rici,
I know what you mean about the comfort of the new body shape and size. I grew up as a skinny kid - I mean, people teased me, made cracks about skin and bones, etc. Was skinny (5'8", 125 lbs) until mid twenties when I had my first child - and I weighed 10 pounds more than "delivery weight" a week later. So, being 185 was comfortable, for quite a while. Now, my FIVE children are all grown (youngest is 24) and I am 210 (recently down from 235 in December)and, although I am glad to see the numbers go down, I am not sure I want to change wardrobes again (I actually LIKE my fat clothes!) and there are some advantages to being fat, believe it or not. For instance, I don't get cold very often, and I wear the largest bra I have ever had now. I wasn't too fond of the 28 A of my pre-children life! Since knee surgery, two years ago, my exercise has been severely limited, and I only do minimal exercising anyway. My life seems to have become comfortable - and I agree, this person that I have become is probably the main thing (?) holding me back from taking off the last 50 pounds I feel, mentally, that I should lose. My doctor is a heavy woman herself - and would rather that I be healthy and happy than skinny or even thin and become a mental case. Who knows? Sometimes I wish I had a magic wand ...
Good luck with your persona!

Hey, I want to be a part of

Hey, I want to be a part of whatever you get started. I can make it until noon and then start to get a little shaky. Never was able to diet. I really have never needed to, but in the last few years, have put on about twenty-five uneccessary lbs. Would love to lose about 2o. I am a 6oyr. old grandmother, who is lazy, do not like to exercise, but would do some walking if I thought that would help. My husband is way over weight and has been on the grapefruit diet, but I am afraid of it because of the eggs and stuff he is allowed as I have high-cholesterol, also have high blood pressure.

Any ideas anyone? How about no carbohydrate diet, have any of you heard of it?

I am only 5'1 and weigh 160lbs. Weighed 130 for about 30yrs. and then all of a sudden, my clothes started getting tight...LOL, I know you all have had that awful feeling....

By Newcomer
Newcomer's picture

no carbohydrate diet?

No, no, no! Your body thinks it's famine time and starts reserving energy! Much better LOW FAT diet! and eating less calories than your body spends. Fad diets are for losing FAD weight. It comes right back, with some to spare. Find a nice sensible diet --- talk it over with your doctor -- especially if you have blood pressure/high cholesterol problems.

Hang in there with us. We'll give you on-going support and help you through the tough spots.

Going without food until you are toooo hungry is not sensible either. Better to have juice and a nice oat-bran muffin, or a bowl of oatmeal or oat flakes or cheerios with fresh fruit and 1% milk. Any of the above oat bran foods will give you a good start (and have a negative effect on your body's production of cholesterol -- actually reducing it). That's the description of my morning breakfast -- every morning since 6/15. It holds me until lunch (soup, salad and jello or fruit, usually). At 3:00 a piece of fresh fruit gets me through the mid-afternoon drowsies, and my dinner is usually a balance of carbs (pasta/rice/potato), cooked veggies and a protein source. 'Round about 9:30-10:00pm I will suck on a sugar-free ice-pop, or have some diet jello, or, if my calorie and fat consumption count was low during the day, enjoy a Yoplait Custard style yogurt (pure decadence!)

Welcome

We're all in the same boat. We lose out ability to burn off the fat as we did when we were younger. Post your objectives in the first discussion and you're ready to go. Look at some of the posts for an example. Keep reading and posting your successes, failures, and problems weekly. Getting involved is one way of commiting yourself to a diet and keeping to it. Don't forget the live Chat on Mondays, 4 & 7 Pacific Time. That will help your commitment.

CONGRATULATIONS NEWCOMER!

I looked at the 'Discussing the Challenge' Page and saw you've lost 11 pounds. Hip, Hip, Hooray! What are you using as a diet guide? I can't believe you lost that much without exercise! I'm so inspired! I look in here a couple times a day and like you I thought the 'Discussing' Page was going to be the talk place. So far this one seems to be the busiest (no thanks to me).

Keep up the good work Newcomer. I sure hope I have some loss to report to you tomorrow evening.

You've just given me a motto we can use:

Hip, Hip, Goaway!

Stan

I'm a little confused

I thought the Discussing the Challenge was where the support group was going to spend it's time, but there hasn't been a posting for a week. Is that where we are to post our goals? (I replied to my original goals and posted my progress report there)

Stan, maybe you could clarify for me? I'm having an UP day and really want to share it!

By Nats
Nats's picture

Weekly Progress Report

I had been thinking about where to put the report and decided that it would best fit under my goals. Then, I saw you beat me to it. I would have missed your report, however, had I not seen Tasson's Congratulations. At least, now, I'll be aware of postings outside the sequence. Notice that I put my reactions to the Challenge under the second discussion. There was very little there since there was nothing to discuss. Now there should be. In any case, we define how to use the discussions. As long as we're talking and interacting, that's the important thing.
You have a right to be UP. That kind of loss took some determination and steadfastness.

Day Four - it isn't any easier!

Glad your checking in here Nats or I'd think I was alone in here. What kind of diet are you on?

I mowed the grass tonight and counted that as my exercise, mainly because I'm just tired today. I certainly can't say I'm hungry and I'm sticking to the program like there's a money prize at the end! LOL!

I truly don't feel like I've lost anything yet, and this is the JumpStart, lose five pounds in five days thing! Oh well, Saturday morning is weigh in time. I'm looking forward to it and preparing myself for a possible disapointment. If I don't lose anything I'm sticking to this anyway. Maybe I'll be the type that nothing happens for two weeks and then twenty pounds drops off. Okay, so I'm hallucinating!

I've been using the computer and books as a distraction when I'm home. Work doesn't seem to be a problem, but at home in the evening when I settle down to relax, I start wanting to munch. It has nothing to do with hunger, it's just rewards! Must learn to reward myself with words of wisdom or works of art or just plain housework to have the satisfaction of completion!

By Nats
Nats's picture

Rewards

Hi,
These early days are terrible. Until your stomach adjusts, it's hunger pangs in spades. I went to a concert tonight and watching all those people munching drove me crazy. I feel something is happening to me, but I won't know until I weigh in Sat.
From past experience, however, weight loss works like you described it. Sometimes, you just plateau and go that way for, what seems, years. Then, boom, you drop 5 pounds. I'm resolved, as you are, to see this through. And I'll be dancin', and dancin', and dancin' all the way.
I think others will be signing on more after the 4th. Those hot dogs and hamburgers will eat into their consciences.
But keep the faith!

Catching up

Nats,

Looks like we have some real troopers for fellow travellers. Heavy pilgrims on their way to the Mecca of Right Weight. I have been swamped with work, but I did get the chat up for this Monday, and will see you there.

Main subject: I have not lost weight, but I am on one of those plateaus you spoke of.

By tasson
tasson's picture

My Third Day!

I've made it through Wednesday safely. I've stuck to the SlimFast Fast Start Program and exercised 30 minutes three days in a row! I know this doesn't sound like much to celebrate, but long journeys are made in small steps.
I've been using Edensoy instead of milk and I'm experiencing a lot of 'gas' in the evenings. Disgusting subject I know, but is anyone else experiencing weird side effects?
I think Friday may be a hard day for me because we have the day off from work for the 4th of July. At work I just stay in my office until noon and since I've declared my diet publicly at work I have to stick to the shake and a piece of fruit for lunch.
I had company tonight and I bought a chocolate merangue pie for them. I made sure it was all divided up between the visitors so none was left for temptation. I was very pleased with myself for being so good. I drank a big glass of water and had a peach for my evening fruit.
Hope everyone else is coming along okay. I wish you all would put your daily experiences on here. It helps to hear other peoples triumphs and tribulations.

Slim Fast and Gas (heehee)

I'm afraid it may be the SlimFast. I had terrible gas and had to stop using it altogether.

Love the Edensoy idea..... I can't have milk either.

By tasson

Pheeeeeyoooouu!

I believe it was the Slim Fast, but when I had the gas, it always passed (past)!

Okay, this has gone on tooooooooo long! :)

By Nats
Nats's picture

Dancin'

Boy, am I ever! Like yourself, I'm dreading the 4th and all those cookouts and goodies and temptations. I found water to be the answer to that gnawing hunger pang. Distraction, too. If I get up and do something, even walk around the yard, it helps to forget. Maybe I should dance around the yard! I'm eating salads and I don't seem to have the gas problems associated with dieting. These first several days, however, are the hardest.

If today is Monday, this must be Belgium.

It can't be "chat day", 'cause there's no chat to be found. I don't really care for chat, but figured I'd lurk around the edges for a while and eavesdrop.
Clicked on your link, which dutifully took me to chat central, but no Dieter's Support Room. It's 9PM EDT--you did say there would be a daytime and evening chat, yes? Oh, well...seeya.

See my response to Tasson on Chats. No, it's not Belgium, it's the Neverlands, the land of banana splits, pizzas, and.....So you're going to LURK. By Newcomer
Newcomer's picture

To lurk...

According to friend Webster, 1. to stay hidden, ready to spring out, attack, etc.; lie in wait 2. to exist undiscovered or unobserved; be present as a latent or not readily apparent threat 3. to move furtively

No one my size can be unobserved for too long...hope to change that! Soon!

If it's Monday...........

Hi all, I have just about made it through my first real day of changing my life through eating well and exercising! I've searched everywhere for the chat, I thought it started today (Monday) but I can't find it anywhere. Am I missing something?

I'm using the Slim Fast Jump Start Program for the next five days, and then on to the regular program. I'm using EdenSoy instead of milk due to intolerance problems. Plus I've been hearing all the good things soy is supposed to do for you, especially women.

I also put one pound weights on each wrist and fastwalked two miles in exactly 30 minutes. Then I did some gardening and ended up sweating like crazy. Couldn't see cause so much was running in my eyes.

I weighed myself last night before I went to bed and I'm not going near the scale till before I go to bed Friday night. According to the box instructions, I should lose five pounds (if I'm faithful, and I will be). One day down!

How's everyone else doing out there? I sure hope I'm not missing the chat!

Nats's picture

Chat

Hi Tasson,
I'm hosting the Chat and I haven't seen it yet. That's probably because the whole Challenge is, technically, to start on July 1st. You and I and the others have jumped the gun in our eagerness. But that's OK. So next Monday, Chat should be jumpin'. We should be seeing some preliminary ads on Chat beginning this week. I'm glad you've lost some weight. I, too, lost a couple of pounds since beginning. Weekend was bad, however. Bad, bad, bad! Went to someone's graduation cookout. Hotdogs and hamburgers! Torture! Monday brings normalcy. Sweat.

I'm starting Monday!

Yes, those famous words again. I'm going on a diet starting Monday! Well, this time I mean it and I'm going to come back here for reports and support. My weight now is more than when I delivered my son, and I gained too much weight while carrying him! All my weight is between shoulders and hips, which I know is the worst area to gain, but hey, who has a choice? I'm the old Apple shape (or better yet, a hard boiled egg on toothpicks). I'm going to use SlimFast in soy milk for my main diet schedule, and since cooking is a hobby of mine, the meals I'm allowed will be knock-out gourmet! If I'm eating less, I'm eating the best! Good-luck to everyone and I look forward to our chats.

Count me in too!

OK...I discovered you. I read through all the postings. And I've added you to my favorites! Count me as a regular. I had a skinny life until I quit smoking...now 15 years later I have 100 additional pounds under my belt (and everywhere else you could possibly cram a pound)!

Last week, Hubby and I decided to go on a summer diet and lose some weight...he needs to lose about 20 lbs.

And the summer diet is Vegetarian. We figure that by cutting out the meat, we are eliminating most of the cholestrol-bearing fat. Since we will continue to include dairy, there will still be SOME cholestrol but we hope to combat it with lotsa OATS! And we'll add beans and tofu and other protein sources. Lots of veggies and fruits to glean from the garden for the summer.

JALO119 - Thanks for the breakfast idea. I plan to put some together tonite! I'm ready to replace the cheerios!

KABJV - what is LiFiber? Where do you find it?

Great Fat-free Salad dressing: Put 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar, 1 6-oz can V-8 juice and 1/2 tsp salt-free seasoning (like Ms. Dash) in a jar, shake well before serving. Refrigerate for future use. (Different vinegars change the flavor...try them all)

NATS - I'm ready for my challenge -- your timing is perfect. Let's go!

Good and easy salad or side dish

Nat, glad you tried the oatmeal/yogurt combination. Here's another---a great side dish or salad I got from one of my diet cookbooks.
5 plum tomatoes--peel, squish out seeds, then slice
2 cucumbers--peel, halve, scoop out pulp, slice
1 big onion, sliced thinly
grated non-fat or low-fat cheddar, any amount
bottle of non-fat Italian dressing
Combine tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, cheese and any amount of nonfat Italian dressing. Add salt if needed.
This is also good added to a sandwich.

Gee! That looks good!

I do pretty good until I see something that looks like it might taste really good. I can plan a skimpy meat and vegetable dinner, and then I will come across something in the way of concentrated sweets, and I just can't resist. One thing that does help when I'm hungry is to whip up a mixture of 1 cup skim milk, 1/2 teaspoon LiFiber, and 1 packet sweetener. It is very filling and very low in calories. I use the blender so that it is well mixed in seconds. It tastes like a banana shake but has far fewer calories. And after I drink that, I am no longer hungry. kabjv@ktis.net
