Does it seem hernias come with being a man? With exercise, nutrition and care when it comes to heavy lifting, it doesn't have to be that way. To prevent hernias -- or to learn about treatment, click to Arnot Ogden Medical Center.

If you do have a hernia, you'll probably know it from the pain that comes from routine body movement. It may hurt when you try to move or lift something heavy, and you may see a bulge under the skin.

A hernia occurs when there's a tear in a part of the body that lets another part of the body slip through the opening, much like an inner tube popping through the hole in a tire. The condition can be worse if you're overweight or inactive.

There are easy ways to prevent hernias: eat more fiber, stop smoking and lose the extra weight. Obesity is a leading cause of hernias so as you get older remember to exercise regularly, keep your muscles strong and -- above all -- be careful when you try to lift a heavy object.
