Host and nutritionist Susan Mitchell responds:
"Well, it all depends on how low is low and high is high. By that I mean, most people do great on a diet that is 55-65% carbs for carbs are the number ONE source of energy to the body and brain. The only reason one gains weight on bread, pasta, protein, candy, beer, whatever is that they take in more calories than they burn off. Regardless of the food eaten, weight loss is bottom line (no pun intended :) ) about calories in against calories out.
"Now, some people with diabetes or who tend to be insulin resistant may do better on a bit higher protein, say 20-25% versus 10-15% of their daily calories but not the 40% as suggested by popular high pro diets.
"The carb level is then decreased to about 50% but no lower. The remainder is fat such as monounsaturated sources like avocado and nuts." -- Dr. Susan Mitchel
