Tracking Weight Loss

Dieting often involves weight increases. But is it fat or muscle mass? Tanita Corp. says its body fat monitor/scales are designed to tell you what's what during weight-loss regimens.

Such regimens often involve plateaus and increases in body weight, but also may mean an increase in muscle mass. And while dieters may become obsessed with fluctuations in weight, it is excess fat, rather than weight alone, that is associated with health problems, a site spokesman says.

A company spokeswoman says the monitors, which look like regular bathroom scales with the addition of metal foot pads, use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to give consumers a body fat percentage reading along with a calculation of body weight.

A one-adult model, with memory for one person's coded information, starts at $79.99 while the family model, able to encode information for as many as four persons, sells for $129.99.
