Weight Cycles: No Mental Harm

Medical researchers say that while weight-cycling may be an up-and-down affair physically for women, the process appears to cause no psychological harm.

Writing in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, investigators at the University of Pittsburgh measured the reactions of more than 429 women experiencing weight cycling.

The researchers measured the women's reactions to the weight-gain, weight-loss episodes in terms of stress.

Their findings: the stress levels for women whose weight-cycling resulted from either adhering to the diet or straying from the diet were no different than those of women whose weight tended to fluctuate under normal conditions.
