A new Harris Interactive/HealthDay poll reports that more Americans now support a woman’s right to choose an abortion than two years ago – a rise from 23 percent to 36 percent. That’s the highest percentage to support abortion since 1985. In addition, the percentage of Americans who oppose abortion under any circumstances fell from 21 percent in 2009 to 17 percent in 2011.

The online poll of almost 2,400 adults, conducted in early July, also revealed that 47 percent were in favor of abortion under “some [but not all] circumstances” (down from 53 percent in 2009).
With individual states working toward restricting access to abortion and limiting or banning insurance coverage as well as trying to defund Planned Parenthood (where abortion represents only 3 percent of PP’s services to 5 million men and women), the tilt toward support of a woman’s right to choose comes as a surprise.
Or is it not surprising? How do thirdage readers feel about abortion rights and the debates over restricting and defunding a woman’s right to choose?
