Unemployment Extension 2010: Will It Help You?

How would the unemployment extension of 2010 help you? Due to the recession there are millions of Americans out of work that rely on unemployment to pay bills and support their families. And according to the Wall Street Journal, 2,502,000 jobless people who have lost access to unemployment benefits since June 2, 2010.

The Senate is expected to vote next week on the issue of extending unemployment benefits but this delay is responsible for a lapse in benefits for a whopping 2.5 jobless Americans. Before taking up the unemployment extension again, Senate Democrats are waiting for West Virginia to appoint an interim replacement for the vacancy created by the death of Senator Robert Byrd. The number of people collecting benefits will fall from 10.5 million to 7 million at the end of July if Congress doesn't extend the payments.

Unemployment benefits are a lifeline, but some economists contend they can give job seekers a reason to turn down work. Proponents counter that any incentive to skip work in order to collect benefits is minimal and that unemployment benefits keep people from permanently dropping out of the labor force. In South Florida, some unemployed workers have refused jobs because the pay is too low to give up unemployment payments, some staffing companies say.
