Unemployment Insurance Benefits Pass Senate Hurdles

Unemployment insurance has been a hot topic in Washington recently, and today in our nation's capitol, progress was made.

Yahoo News tells us that "Legislation to restore unemployment benefits to millions who have been out of work for more than six months broke free of Senate Republican delaying tactics on Tuesday. Senators voted 60-40 to move ahead on the bill, clearing the way for a final Senate vote later on Tuesday. The measure would restore jobless checks for 2.5 million people whose benefits started running out seven weeks ago in a stubbornly jobless economic recovery."

The bill received some Republican support, to the dismay of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. McConnell offered some insight on his displeasure with the bill:

"We've repeatedly voted for similar bills in the past. And we are ready to support one now," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. "What we do not support and we make no apologies for is borrowing tens of billions of dollars to pass this bill at a time when the national debt is spinning completely out of control."

The Epoch Times has additional information on the legislation:

President Obama had vigorously urged extension of Federal unemployment insurance provisions to provide benefits to 2.5 million of unemployed Americans, after the program expired on June 4.

Americans stuck on the jobless queue will receive benefits of $309 per week on average to assist them while seeking new employment. Payments for the long term unemployed were halted while the Senate balked at extending them. Those affected by the halt will get retroactive benefits.According to the United States Department of Labor, State Unemployment Insurance Benefits Program provides workers who lost employment unexpectedly with financial help for a maximum of 26 weeks, depending on the policies of each state. What do you think of these developments?
